Hāliddikānisutta With Hāliddikāni

Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ āyasmā mahākaccāno avantÄ«su viharati kuraraghare papāte pabbate. At one time Venerable Mahākaccāna was staying in the land of the Avantis near Kuraraghara on Steep Mountain.

Atha kho hāliddikāni gahapati yenāyasmā mahākaccāno tenupasaį¹…kami ā€¦peā€¦ ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho hāliddikāni gahapati āyasmantaį¹ mahākaccānaį¹ etadavoca: Then the householder Hāliddikāni went up to Venerable Mahākaccāna ā€¦ and asked him,

ā€œvuttamidaį¹, bhante, bhagavatā: ā€œSir, this was said by the Buddha:

ā€˜dhātunānattaį¹ paį¹­icca uppajjati phassanānattaį¹; phassanānattaį¹ paį¹­icca uppajjati vedanānānattanā€™ti. ā€˜Diversity of elements gives rise to diversity of contacts, and diversity of contacts gives rise to diversity of feelings.ā€™

Kathaį¹ nu kho, bhante, dhātunānattaį¹ paį¹­icca uppajjati phassanānattaį¹; phassanānattaį¹ paį¹­icca uppajjati vedanānānattanā€ti? How does diversity of elements give rise to diversity of contacts, and diversity of contacts gives rise to diversity of feelings?ā€

ā€œIdha, gahapati, bhikkhu cakkhunā rÅ«paį¹ disvā ā€˜manāpaį¹ itthetanā€™ti pajānāti cakkhuviƱƱāį¹‡aį¹ sukhavedaniyaƱca. ā€œHouseholder, itā€™s when a mendicant sees a sight with the eye and understands it to be agreeable.

Phassaį¹ paį¹­icca uppajjati sukhā vedanā. There is eye consciousness; and pleasant feeling arises dependent on a contact to be experienced as pleasant.

Cakkhunā kho paneva rÅ«paį¹ disvā ā€˜amanāpaį¹ itthetanā€™ti pajānāti cakkhuviƱƱāį¹‡aį¹ dukkhavedaniyaƱca. Then they see a sight and understand it to be disagreeable.

Phassaį¹ paį¹­icca uppajjati dukkhā vedanā. There is eye consciousness; and painful feeling arises dependent on a contact to be experienced as painful.

Cakkhunā kho paneva rÅ«paį¹ disvā ā€˜upekkhāį¹­į¹­hāniyaį¹ itthetanā€™ti pajānāti cakkhuviƱƱāį¹‡aį¹ adukkhamasukhavedaniyaƱca. Then they see a sight and understand it to be a basis for equanimity.

Phassaį¹ paį¹­icca uppajjati adukkhamasukhā vedanā. There is eye consciousness; and neutral feeling arises dependent on a contact to be experienced as neutral.

Puna caparaį¹, gahapati, bhikkhu sotena saddaį¹ sutvā ā€¦peā€¦ Furthermore, a mendicant hears a sound with the ear ā€¦

ghānena gandhaį¹ ghāyitvā ā€¦peā€¦ smells an odor with the nose ā€¦

jivhāya rasaį¹ sāyitvā ā€¦peā€¦ tastes a flavor with the tongue ā€¦

kāyena phoį¹­į¹­habbaį¹ phusitvā ā€¦peā€¦ feels a touch with the body ā€¦

manasā dhammaį¹ viƱƱāya ā€˜manāpaį¹ itthetanā€™ti pajānāti manoviƱƱāį¹‡aį¹ sukhavedaniyaƱca. knows an idea with the mind and understands it to be agreeable.

Manasā kho paneva dhammaį¹ viƱƱāya ā€˜amanāpaį¹ itthetanā€™ti pajānāti manoviƱƱāį¹‡aį¹ dukkhavedaniyaƱca. Then they know an idea and understand it to be disagreeable.
