Paį¹hamanatumhÄkasutta Not Yours (1st)
āYaį¹, bhikkhave, na tumhÄkaį¹ taį¹ pajahatha. āMendicants, give up whatās not yours.
Taį¹ vo pahÄ«naį¹ hitÄya sukhÄya bhavissati. Giving it up will be for your welfare and happiness.
KiƱca, bhikkhave, na tumhÄkaį¹? And what isnāt yours?
Cakkhu, bhikkhave, na tumhÄkaį¹; taį¹ pajahatha. The eye isnāt yours: give it up.
Taį¹ vo pahÄ«naį¹ hitÄya sukhÄya bhavissati ā¦peā¦ Giving it up will be for your welfare and happiness.
jivhÄ na tumhÄkaį¹; taį¹ pajahatha. The ear ā¦ nose ā¦ tongue ā¦ body ā¦
SÄ vo pahÄ«nÄ hitÄya sukhÄya bhavissati ā¦peā¦
mano na tumhÄkaį¹; taį¹ pajahatha. mind isnāt yours: give it up.
So vo pahÄ«no hitÄya sukhÄya bhavissati. Giving it up will be for your welfare and happiness.
SeyyathÄpi, bhikkhave, yaį¹ imasmiį¹ jetavane tiį¹akaį¹į¹hasÄkhÄpalÄsaį¹ taį¹ jano hareyya vÄ įøaheyya vÄ yathÄpaccayaį¹ vÄ kareyya, api nu tumhÄkaį¹ evamassa: Suppose a person was to carry off the grass, sticks, branches, and leaves in this Jetaās Grove, or burn them, or do what they want with them. Would you think:
āamhe jano harati vÄ įøahati vÄ yathÄpaccayaį¹ vÄ karotÄ«āāti? āThis person is carrying us off, burning us, or doing what they want with usā?ā
āNo hetaį¹, bhanteā. āNo, sir.
āTaį¹ kissa hetuā? Why is that?
āNa hi no etaį¹, bhante, attÄ vÄ attaniyaį¹ vÄāti. Because to us thatās neither self nor belonging to self.ā
āEvameva kho, bhikkhave, cakkhu na tumhÄkaį¹; taį¹ pajahatha. āIn the same way, the eye isnāt yours: give it up.
