Kimatthiyabrahmacariyasutta Whatā€™s the Purpose of the Spiritual Life?

ā€œSace vo, bhikkhave, aƱƱatitthiyā paribbājakā evaį¹ puccheyyuį¹: ā€œMendicants, if wanderers who follow another religion were to ask you:

ā€˜kimatthiyaį¹, āvuso, samaį¹‡e gotame brahmacariyaį¹ vussatÄ«ā€™ti? ā€˜Reverends, whatā€™s the purpose of leading the spiritual life under the ascetic Gotama?ā€™

Evaį¹ puį¹­į¹­hā tumhe, bhikkhave, tesaį¹ aƱƱatitthiyānaį¹ paribbājakānaį¹ evaį¹ byākareyyātha: You should answer them:

ā€˜dukkhassa kho, āvuso, pariƱƱāya bhagavati brahmacariyaį¹ vussatÄ«ā€™ti. ā€˜The purpose of leading the spiritual life under the Buddha is to completely understand suffering.ā€™

Sace pana vo, bhikkhave, aƱƱatitthiyā paribbājakā evaį¹ puccheyyuį¹: If wanderers of other religions were to ask you:

ā€˜katamaį¹ panāvuso, dukkhaį¹, yassa pariƱƱāya samaį¹‡e gotame brahmacariyaį¹ vussatÄ«ā€™ti? ā€˜Reverends, what is that suffering?ā€™

Evaį¹ puį¹­į¹­hā tumhe, bhikkhave, tesaį¹ aƱƱatitthiyānaį¹ paribbājakānaį¹ evaį¹ byākareyyātha: You should answer them:

ā€˜Cakkhu kho, āvuso, dukkhaį¹; ā€˜The eye is suffering.

Yampidaį¹ cakkhusamphassapaccayā uppajjati vedayitaį¹ sukhaį¹ vā dukkhaį¹ vā adukkhamasukhaį¹ vā tampi dukkhaį¹; The pleasant, painful, or neutral feeling that arises conditioned by eye contact is also suffering.

tassa pariƱƱāya bhagavati brahmacariyaį¹ vussati ā€¦peā€¦ The purpose of leading the spiritual life under the Buddha is to completely understand this.

jivhā dukkhā ā€¦ The ear ā€¦ nose ā€¦ tongue ā€¦ body ā€¦

yampidaį¹ manosamphassapaccayā uppajjati vedayitaį¹ sukhaį¹ vā dukkhaį¹ vā adukkhamasukhaį¹ vā tampi dukkhaį¹; The pleasant, painful, or neutral feeling that arises conditioned by mind contact is also suffering.

tassa pariƱƱāya bhagavati brahmacariyaį¹ vussati. The purpose of living the spiritual life under the Buddha is to completely understand this.

Idaį¹ kho, āvuso, dukkhaį¹; This is that suffering.
