AtthinukhopariyÄyasutta Is There a Method?
āAtthi nu kho, bhikkhave, pariyÄyo yaį¹ pariyÄyaį¹ Ägamma bhikkhu aƱƱatreva saddhÄya, aƱƱatra ruciyÄ, aƱƱatra anussavÄ, aƱƱatra ÄkÄraparivitakkÄ, aƱƱatra diį¹į¹hinijjhÄnakkhantiyÄ aƱƱaį¹ byÄkareyya: āMendicants, is there a methodāapart from faith, endorsement, oral transmission, reasoned train of thought, or acceptance of a view after deliberationāthat a mendicant can rely on to declare their enlightenment? That is:
ākhÄ«į¹Ä jÄti, vusitaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹, kataį¹ karaį¹Ä«yaį¹, nÄparaį¹ itthattÄyÄāti pajÄnÄmÄ«āti? āI understand: āRebirth is ended, the spiritual journey has been completed, what had to be done has been done, there is nothing further for this place.āāā
āBhagavaį¹mÅ«lakÄ no, bhante, dhammÄ, bhagavaį¹nettikÄ bhagavaį¹paį¹isaraį¹Ä. SÄdhu vata, bhante, bhagavantaį¹yeva paį¹ibhÄtu etassa bhÄsitassa attho. Bhagavato sutvÄ bhikkhÅ« dhÄressantÄ«āti. āOur teachings are rooted in the Buddha. He is our guide and our refuge. Sir, may the Buddha himself please clarify the meaning of this. The mendicants will listen and remember it.ā
āTena hi, bhikkhave, suį¹Ätha, sÄdhukaį¹ manasi karotha, bhÄsissÄmÄ«āti. āWell then, mendicants, listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā
āEvaį¹, bhanteāti kho te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato paccassosuį¹. āYes, sir,ā they replied.
BhagavÄ etadavoca: The Buddha said this:

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu cakkhunÄ rÅ«paį¹ disvÄ santaį¹ vÄ ajjhattaį¹ rÄgadosamohaį¹, atthi me ajjhattaį¹ rÄgadosamohoti pajÄnÄti; Take a mendicant who sees a sight with the eye. When they have greed, hate, and delusion in them, they understand āI have greed, hate, and delusion in me.ā
asantaį¹ vÄ ajjhattaį¹ rÄgadosamohaį¹, natthi me ajjhattaį¹ rÄgadosamohoti pajÄnÄti. When they donāt have greed, hate, and delusion in them, they understand āI donāt have greed, hate, and delusion in me.ā
Yaį¹ taį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhu cakkhunÄ rÅ«paį¹ disvÄ santaį¹ vÄ ajjhattaį¹ rÄgadosamohaį¹, atthi me ajjhattaį¹ rÄgadosamohoti pajÄnÄti; asantaį¹ vÄ ajjhattaį¹ rÄgadosamohaį¹, natthi me ajjhattaį¹ rÄgadosamohoti pajÄnÄti. Api nu me, bhikkhave, dhammÄ saddhÄya vÄ veditabbÄ, ruciyÄ vÄ veditabbÄ, anussavena vÄ veditabbÄ, ÄkÄraparivitakkena vÄ veditabbÄ, diį¹į¹hinijjhÄnakkhantiyÄ vÄ veditabbÄāti? Since this is so, are these things understood by faith, endorsement, oral transmission, reasoned train of thought, or acceptance of a view after deliberation?ā

āNanume, bhikkhave, dhammÄ paƱƱÄya disvÄ veditabbÄāti? āArenāt they understood by seeing them with wisdom?ā
āEvaį¹, bhanteā. āYes, sir.ā

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhu manasÄ dhammaį¹ viƱƱÄya santaį¹ vÄ ajjhattaį¹ rÄgadosamohaį¹, atthi me ajjhattaį¹ rÄgadosamohoti pajÄnÄti; knows an idea with the mind. When they have greed, hate, and delusion in them, they understand āI have greed, hate, and delusion in me.ā
