Atthinukhopariyāyasutta Is There a Method?

ā€œAtthi nu kho, bhikkhave, pariyāyo yaį¹ pariyāyaį¹ āgamma bhikkhu aƱƱatreva saddhāya, aƱƱatra ruciyā, aƱƱatra anussavā, aƱƱatra ākāraparivitakkā, aƱƱatra diį¹­į¹­hinijjhānakkhantiyā aƱƱaį¹ byākareyya: ā€œMendicants, is there a methodā€”apart from faith, endorsement, oral transmission, reasoned train of thought, or acceptance of a view after deliberationā€”that a mendicant can rely on to declare their enlightenment? That is:

ā€˜khÄ«į¹‡Ä jāti, vusitaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹, kataį¹ karaį¹‡Ä«yaį¹, nāparaį¹ itthattāyāā€™ti pajānāmÄ«ā€ti? ā€˜I understand: ā€œRebirth is ended, the spiritual journey has been completed, what had to be done has been done, there is nothing further for this place.ā€ā€™ā€

ā€œBhagavaį¹mÅ«lakā no, bhante, dhammā, bhagavaį¹nettikā bhagavaį¹paį¹­isaraį¹‡Ä. Sādhu vata, bhante, bhagavantaį¹yeva paį¹­ibhātu etassa bhāsitassa attho. Bhagavato sutvā bhikkhÅ« dhāressantÄ«ā€ti. ā€œOur teachings are rooted in the Buddha. He is our guide and our refuge. Sir, may the Buddha himself please clarify the meaning of this. The mendicants will listen and remember it.ā€

ā€œTena hi, bhikkhave, suį¹‡Ätha, sādhukaį¹ manasi karotha, bhāsissāmÄ«ā€ti. ā€œWell then, mendicants, listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā€

ā€œEvaį¹, bhanteā€ti kho te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato paccassosuį¹. ā€œYes, sir,ā€ they replied.

Bhagavā etadavoca: The Buddha said this:

ā€œatthi, bhikkhave, pariyāyo yaį¹ pariyāyaį¹ āgamma bhikkhu aƱƱatreva saddhāya, aƱƱatra ruciyā, aƱƱatra anussavā, aƱƱatra ākāraparivitakkā, aƱƱatra diį¹­į¹­hinijjhānakkhantiyā aƱƱaį¹ byākareyya: ā€œThere is a methodā€”apart from faith, endorsement, oral transmission, reasoned train of thought, or acceptance of a view after deliberationā€”that a mendicant can rely on to declare their enlightenment. That is:

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, pariyāyo, yaį¹ pariyāyaį¹ āgamma bhikkhu aƱƱatreva saddhāya ā€¦peā€¦ aƱƱatra diį¹­į¹­hinijjhānakkhantiyā aƱƱaį¹ byākaroti: ā€˜khÄ«į¹‡Ä jāti, vusitaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹, kataį¹ karaį¹‡Ä«yaį¹, nāparaį¹ itthattāyāti pajānāmÄ«ā€™ti? And what is that method?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu cakkhunā rÅ«paį¹ disvā santaį¹ vā ajjhattaį¹ rāgadosamohaį¹, atthi me ajjhattaį¹ rāgadosamohoti pajānāti; Take a mendicant who sees a sight with the eye. When they have greed, hate, and delusion in them, they understand ā€˜I have greed, hate, and delusion in me.ā€™

asantaį¹ vā ajjhattaį¹ rāgadosamohaį¹, natthi me ajjhattaį¹ rāgadosamohoti pajānāti. When they donā€™t have greed, hate, and delusion in them, they understand ā€˜I donā€™t have greed, hate, and delusion in me.ā€™

Yaį¹ taį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhu cakkhunā rÅ«paį¹ disvā santaį¹ vā ajjhattaį¹ rāgadosamohaį¹, atthi me ajjhattaį¹ rāgadosamohoti pajānāti; asantaį¹ vā ajjhattaį¹ rāgadosamohaį¹, natthi me ajjhattaį¹ rāgadosamohoti pajānāti. Api nu me, bhikkhave, dhammā saddhāya vā veditabbā, ruciyā vā veditabbā, anussavena vā veditabbā, ākāraparivitakkena vā veditabbā, diį¹­į¹­hinijjhānakkhantiyā vā veditabbāā€ti? Since this is so, are these things understood by faith, endorsement, oral transmission, reasoned train of thought, or acceptance of a view after deliberation?ā€

ā€œNo hetaį¹, bhanteā€. ā€œNo, sir.ā€

ā€œNanume, bhikkhave, dhammā paƱƱāya disvā veditabbāā€ti? ā€œArenā€™t they understood by seeing them with wisdom?ā€

ā€œEvaį¹, bhanteā€. ā€œYes, sir.ā€

ā€œAyaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, pariyāyo yaį¹ pariyāyaį¹ āgamma bhikkhu aƱƱatreva saddhāya, aƱƱatra ruciyā, aƱƱatra anussavā, aƱƱatra ākāraparivitakkā, aƱƱatra diį¹­į¹­hinijjhānakkhantiyā aƱƱaį¹ byākaroti: ā€œThis is a methodā€”apart from faith, endorsement, oral transmission, reasoned train of thought, or acceptance of a view after deliberationā€”that a mendicant can rely on to declare their enlightenment. Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhu jivhāya rasaį¹ sāyitvā santaį¹ vā ajjhattaį¹ ā€¦peā€¦ rāgadosamohoti pajānāti; asantaį¹ vā ajjhattaį¹ rāgadosamohaį¹, natthi me ajjhattaį¹ rāgadosamohoti pajānāti. Furthermore, a mendicant hears a sound ā€¦ smells an odor ā€¦ tastes a flavor ā€¦ feels a touch ā€¦

Yaį¹ taį¹, bhikkhave, jivhāya rasaį¹ sāyitvā santaį¹ vā ajjhattaį¹ rāgadosamohaį¹, atthi me ajjhattaį¹ rāgadosamohoti pajānāti; asantaį¹ vā ajjhattaį¹ rāgadosamohaį¹, natthi me ajjhattaį¹ rāgadosamohoti pajānāti; api nu me, bhikkhave, dhammā saddhāya vā veditabbā, ruciyā vā veditabbā, anussavena vā veditabbā, ākāraparivitakkena vā veditabbā, diį¹­į¹­hinijjhānakkhantiyā vā veditabbāā€ti?

ā€œNo hetaį¹, bhanteā€.

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhu manasā dhammaį¹ viƱƱāya santaį¹ vā ajjhattaį¹ rāgadosamohaį¹, atthi me ajjhattaį¹ rāgadosamohoti pajānāti; knows an idea with the mind. When they have greed, hate, and delusion in them, they understand ā€˜I have greed, hate, and delusion in me.ā€™

asantaį¹ vā ajjhattaį¹ rāgadosamohaį¹, natthi me ajjhattaį¹ rāgadosamohoti pajānāti. When they donā€™t have greed, hate, and delusion in them, they understand ā€˜I donā€™t have greed, hate, and delusion in me.ā€™
