Atha kho ÄyasmÄ Änando yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinnaį¹ kho Äyasmantaį¹ Änandaį¹ bhagavÄ etadavoca: Then Venerable Änanda went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him,
ākatamÄ nu kho, Änanda, vedanÄ, katamo vedanÄsamudayo, katamo vedanÄnirodho, katamÄ vedanÄnirodhagÄminÄ« paį¹ipadÄ? āÄnanda, what is feeling? Whatās the origin of feeling? Whatās the cessation of feeling? Whatās the practice that leads to the cessation of feeling?
Ko vedanÄya assÄdo, ko ÄdÄ«navo, kiį¹ nissaraį¹anāti? And what is feelingās gratification, drawback, and escape?ā
āBhagavaį¹mÅ«lakÄ no, bhante, dhammÄ bhagavaį¹nettikÄ bhagavaį¹paį¹isaraį¹Ä. SÄdhu, bhante, bhagavantaƱƱeva paį¹ibhÄtu etassa bhÄsitassa attho. Bhagavato sutvÄ bhikkhÅ« dhÄressantÄ«āti. āOur teachings are rooted in the Buddha. He is our guide and our refuge. Sir, may the Buddha himself please clarify the meaning of this. The mendicants will listen and remember it.ā
āTena hi, Änanda, suį¹ohi, sÄdhukaį¹ manasi karohi; bhÄsissÄmÄ«āti. āWell then, Änanda, listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā
āEvaį¹, bhanteāti kho ÄyasmÄ Änando bhagavato paccassosi. āYes, sir,ā Änanda replied.
BhagavÄ etadavoca: The Buddha said this:
ātisso imÄ, Änanda, vedanÄāāÄnanda, there are these three feelings:
sukhÄ vedanÄ, dukkhÄ vedanÄ, adukkhamasukhÄ vedanÄāpleasant, painful, and neutral.
imÄ vuccanti, Änanda, vedanÄ ā¦peā¦ These are called feeling. ā¦
phassasamudayÄ ā¦peā¦
khÄ«į¹Äsavassa bhikkhuno rÄgo paį¹ippassaddho hoti, doso paį¹ippassaddho hoti, moho paį¹ippassaddho hotÄ«āti. For a mendicant who has ended the defilements, greed, hate, and delusion have been tranquilized.ā
