Aį¹­į¹­hasatasutta The Explanation of the Hundred and Eight

ā€œAį¹­į¹­hasatapariyāyaį¹ vo, bhikkhave, dhammapariyāyaį¹ desessāmi. ā€œMendicants, I will teach you an exposition of the teaching on the hundred and eight.

Taį¹ suį¹‡Ätha. Listen ā€¦

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, aį¹­į¹­hasatapariyāyo, dhammapariyāyo? And what is the exposition of the teaching on the hundred and eight?

Dvepi mayā, bhikkhave, vedanā vuttā pariyāyena; Mendicants, in one explanation Iā€™ve spoken of two feelings. In another explanation Iā€™ve spoken of three feelings, or five, six, eighteen, thirty-six, or a hundred and eight feelings.

tissopi mayā vedanā vuttā pariyāyena;

paƱcapi mayā vedanā vuttā pariyāyena;

chapi mayā vedanā vuttā pariyāyena;

aį¹­į¹­hārasāpi mayā vedanā vuttā pariyāyena;

chattiį¹sāpi mayā vedanā vuttā pariyāyena;

aį¹­į¹­hasatampi mayā vedanā vuttā pariyāyena.

Katamā ca, bhikkhave, dve vedanā? And what are the two feelings?

Kāyikā ca cetasikā caā€”Physical and mental.

imā vuccanti, bhikkhave, dve vedanā. These are called the two feelings.

Katamā ca, bhikkhave, tisso vedanā? And what are the three feelings?

Sukhā vedanā, dukkhā vedanā, adukkhamasukhā vedanāā€”Pleasant, painful, and neutral feelings. ā€¦

imā vuccanti, bhikkhave, tisso vedanā.

Katamā ca, bhikkhave, paƱca vedanā? And what are the five feelings?

Sukhindriyaį¹, dukkhindriyaį¹, somanassindriyaį¹, domanassindriyaį¹, upekkhindriyaį¹ā€”The faculties of pleasure, pain, happiness, sadness, and equanimity. ā€¦

imā vuccanti, bhikkhave, paƱca vedanā.

Katamā ca, bhikkhave, cha vedanā? And what are the six feelings?

Cakkhusamphassajā vedanā ā€¦peā€¦ Feeling born of eye contact ā€¦ ear contact ā€¦ nose contact ā€¦ tongue contact ā€¦ body contact ā€¦

manosamphassajā vedanāā€”mind contact. ā€¦

imā vuccanti, bhikkhave, cha vedanā.

Katamā ca, bhikkhave, aį¹­į¹­hārasa vedanā? And what are the eighteen feelings?

Cha somanassÅ«pavicārā, cha domanassÅ«pavicārā, cha upekkhÅ«pavicārāā€”There are six preoccupations with happiness, six preoccupations with sadness, and six preoccupations with equanimity. ā€¦

imā vuccanti, bhikkhave, aį¹­į¹­hārasa vedanā.

Katamā ca, bhikkhave, chattiį¹sa vedanā? And what are the thirty-six feelings?

Cha gehasitāni somanassāni, cha nekkhammasitāni somanassāni, cha gehasitāni domanassāni, cha nekkhammasitāni domanassāni, cha gehasitā upekkhā, cha nekkhammasitā upekkhāā€”Six kinds of domestic happiness and six kinds of renunciate happiness. Six kinds of domestic sadness and six kinds of renunciate sadness. Six kinds of domestic equanimity and six kinds of renunciate equanimity. ā€¦

imā vuccanti, bhikkhave, chattiį¹sa vedanā.

KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, aį¹­į¹­hasataį¹ vedanā? And what are the hundred and eight feelings?

AtÄ«tā chattiį¹sa vedanā, anāgatā chattiį¹sa vedanā, paccuppannā chattiį¹sa vedanāā€”Thirty six feelings in the past, future, and present.

imā vuccanti, bhikkhave, aį¹­į¹­hasataį¹ vedanā. These are called the hundred and eight feelings.

Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, aį¹­į¹­hasatapariyāyo dhammapariyāyoā€ti. This is the exposition of the teaching on the hundred and eight.ā€
