ĀsavapaƱhāsutta A Question About Defilements

ā€œā€˜Ä€savo, āsavoā€™ti, āvuso sāriputta, vuccati. ā€œReverend Sāriputta, they speak of this thing called ā€˜defilementā€™.

Katamo nu kho, āvuso, āsavoā€ti? What is defilement?ā€

ā€œTayo me, āvuso, āsavā. ā€œReverend, there are three defilements.

Kāmāsavo, bhavāsavo, avijjāsavoā€”The defilements of sensuality, desire to be reborn, and ignorance.

ime kho, āvuso, tayo āsavāā€ti. These are the three defilements.ā€

ā€œAtthi panāvuso, maggo atthi paį¹­ipadā etesaį¹ āsavānaį¹ pahānāyāā€ti? ā€œBut, reverend, is there a path and a practice for completely understanding these three defilements?ā€

ā€œAtthi kho, āvuso, maggo atthi paį¹­ipadā etesaį¹ āsavānaį¹ pahānāyāā€ti. ā€œThere is.ā€ ā€¦

ā€œAyameva kho, āvuso, ariyo aį¹­į¹­haį¹…giko maggo etesaį¹ āsavānaį¹ pahānāya, seyyathidaį¹ā€”

sammādiį¹­į¹­hi ā€¦peā€¦ sammāsamādhi.

Ayaį¹ kho, āvuso, maggo ayaį¹ paį¹­ipadā, etesaį¹ āsavānaį¹ pahānāyāā€ti.

ā€œBhaddako, āvuso, maggo bhaddikā paį¹­ipadā, etesaį¹ āsavānaį¹ pahānāya.
