UpādānapaƱhāsutta A Question About Grasping

ā€œā€˜Upādānaį¹, upādānanā€™ti, āvuso sāriputta, vuccati. ā€œReverend Sāriputta, they speak of this thing called ā€˜graspingā€™.

Katamaį¹ nu kho, āvuso, upādānanā€ti? What is grasping?ā€

ā€œCattārimāni, āvuso, upādānāni. ā€œReverend, there are these four kinds of grasping.

Kāmupādānaį¹, diį¹­į¹­hupādānaį¹ sÄ«labbatupādānaį¹, attavādupādānaį¹ā€”Grasping at sensual pleasures, views, precepts and observances, and theories of a self.

imāni kho, āvuso, cattāri upādānānÄ«ā€ti. These are the four kinds of grasping.ā€

ā€œAtthi panāvuso, maggo atthi paį¹­ipadā, etesaį¹ upādānānaį¹ pahānāyāā€ti? ā€œBut, reverend, is there a path and a practice for completely understanding these four kinds of grasping?ā€

ā€œAtthi kho, āvuso, maggo atthi paį¹­ipadā, etesaį¹ upādānānaį¹ pahānāyāā€ti. ā€œThere is.ā€ ā€¦

ā€œKatamo panāvuso, maggo katamā paį¹­ipadā, etesaį¹ upādānānaį¹ pahānāyāā€ti?

ā€œAyameva kho, āvuso, ariyo aį¹­į¹­haį¹…giko maggo, etesaį¹ upādānānaį¹ pahānāya, seyyathidaį¹ā€”

sammādiį¹­į¹­hi ā€¦peā€¦ sammāsamādhi.

Ayaį¹ kho, āvuso, maggo ayaį¹ paį¹­ipadā, etesaį¹ upādānānaį¹ pahānāyāā€ti.

ā€œBhaddako, āvuso, maggo bhaddikā paį¹­ipadā, etesaį¹ upādānānaį¹ pahānāya.

AlaƱca panāvuso sāriputta, appamādāyāā€ti.
