DukkhapaƱhāsutta A Question About Suffering

ā€œā€˜Dukkhaį¹, dukkhanā€™ti, āvuso sāriputta, vuccati. ā€œReverend Sāriputta, they speak of this thing called ā€˜sufferingā€™.

Katamaį¹ nu kho, āvuso, dukkhanā€ti? What is suffering?ā€

ā€œTisso imā, āvuso, dukkhatā. ā€œReverend, there are these three forms of suffering.

Dukkhadukkhatā, saį¹…khāradukkhatā, vipariį¹‡Ämadukkhatāā€”The suffering inherent in painful feeling; the suffering inherent in conditions; and the suffering inherent in perishing.

imā kho, āvuso, tisso dukkhatāā€ti. These are the three forms of suffering.ā€

ā€œAtthi panāvuso maggo atthi paį¹­ipadā, etāsaį¹ dukkhatānaį¹ pariƱƱāyāā€ti? ā€œBut, reverend, is there a path and a practice for completely understanding these forms of suffering?ā€

ā€œAtthi kho, āvuso, maggo atthi paį¹­ipadā, etāsaį¹ dukkhatānaį¹ pariƱƱāyāā€ti. ā€œThere is.ā€ ā€¦

ā€œKatamo panāvuso, maggo katamā paį¹­ipadā, etāsaį¹ dukkhatānaį¹ pariƱƱāyāā€ti?

ā€œAyameva kho, āvuso, ariyo aį¹­į¹­haį¹…giko maggo, etāsaį¹ dukkhatānaį¹ pariƱƱāya, seyyathidaį¹ā€”

sammādiį¹­į¹­hi ā€¦peā€¦ sammāsamādhi.

Ayaį¹ kho, āvuso, maggo ayaį¹ paį¹­ipadā, etāsaį¹ dukkhatānaį¹ pariƱƱāyāā€ti.

ā€œBhaddako, āvuso, maggo bhaddikā paį¹­ipadā, etāsaį¹ dukkhatānaį¹ pariƱƱāya.

AlaƱca panāvuso sāriputta, appamādāyāā€ti.
