DutiyajhÄnapaƱhÄsutta A Question About the Second Absorption
āāDutiyaį¹ jhÄnaį¹, dutiyaį¹ jhÄnanāti vuccati. āThey speak of this thing called the āsecond absorptionā.
Katamaį¹ nu kho dutiyaį¹ jhÄnanti? What is the second absorption?
Tassa mayhaį¹, Ävuso, etadahosi: It occurred to me:
āidha bhikkhu vitakkavicÄrÄnaį¹ vÅ«pasamÄ ajjhattaį¹ sampasÄdanaį¹ cetaso ekodibhÄvaį¹ avitakkaį¹ avicÄraį¹ samÄdhijaį¹ pÄ«tisukhaį¹ dutiyaį¹ jhÄnaį¹ upasampajja viharati. āAs the placing of the mind and keeping it connected are stilled, a mendicant enters and remains in the second absorption, which has the rapture and bliss born of immersion, with internal clarity and mind at one, without placing the mind and keeping it connected.
Idaį¹ vuccati dutiyaį¹ jhÄnanāti. This is called the second absorption.ā
So khvÄhaį¹, Ävuso, vitakkavicÄrÄnaį¹ vÅ«pasamÄ ajjhattaį¹ sampasÄdanaį¹ cetaso ekodibhÄvaį¹ avitakkaį¹ avicÄraį¹ samÄdhijaį¹ pÄ«tisukhaį¹ dutiyaį¹ jhÄnaį¹ upasampajja viharÄmi. And so ā¦ I was entering and remaining in the second absorption.
Tassa mayhaį¹, Ävuso, iminÄ vihÄrena viharato vitakkasahagatÄ saƱƱÄmanasikÄrÄ samudÄcaranti. While I was in that meditation, perception and focus accompanied by placing the mind beset me.
Atha kho maį¹, Ävuso, bhagavÄ iddhiyÄ upasaį¹
kamitvÄ etadavoca: Then the Buddha came up to me with his psychic power and said,
āmoggallÄna, moggallÄna. āMoggallÄna, MoggallÄna!
MÄ, brÄhmaį¹a, dutiyaį¹ jhÄnaį¹ pamÄdo, dutiye jhÄne cittaį¹ saį¹į¹hapehi, dutiye jhÄne cittaį¹ ekodiį¹ karohi, dutiye jhÄne cittaį¹ samÄdahÄāti. Donāt neglect the second absorption, brahmin! Settle your mind in the second absorption; unify your mind and immerse it in the second absorption.ā
So khvÄhaį¹, Ävuso, aparena samayena vitakkavicÄrÄnaį¹ vÅ«pasamÄ ajjhattaį¹ sampasÄdanaį¹ cetaso ekodibhÄvaį¹ avitakkaį¹ avicÄraį¹ samÄdhijaį¹ pÄ«tisukhaį¹ dutiyaį¹ jhÄnaį¹ upasampajja vihÄsiį¹. And so, after some time ā¦ I entered and remained in the second absorption.
YaƱhi taį¹, Ävuso, sammÄ vadamÄno vadeyya: So if anyone should be rightly called
āsatthÄrÄnuggahito sÄvako mahÄbhiƱƱataį¹ pattoāti, mamaį¹ taį¹ sammÄ vadamÄno vadeyya: a disciple who attained to great direct knowledge with help from the Teacher, itās me.ā
āsatthÄrÄnuggahito sÄvako mahÄbhiƱƱataį¹ pattoāāti.
Dutiyaį¹.
