TatiyajhÄnapaƱhÄsutta A Question About the Third Absorption
āāTatiyaį¹ jhÄnaį¹, tatiyaį¹ jhÄnanāti vuccati. āThey speak of this thing called the āthird absorptionā.
Katamaį¹ nu kho tatiyaį¹ jhÄnanti? What is the third absorption?
Tassa mayhaį¹, Ävuso, etadahosiāIt occurred to me:
idha bhikkhu pÄ«tiyÄ ca virÄgÄ upekkhako ca viharati sato ca sampajÄno sukhaƱca kÄyena paį¹isaį¹vedeti, yaį¹ taį¹ ariyÄ Äcikkhanti: āupekkhako satimÄ sukhavihÄrÄ«āti tatiyaį¹ jhÄnaį¹ upasampajja viharati. āWith the fading away of rapture, a mendicant enters and remains in the third absorption, where they meditate with equanimity, mindful and aware, personally experiencing the bliss of which the noble ones declare, āEquanimous and mindful, one meditates in bliss.ā
Idaį¹ vuccati tatiyaį¹ jhÄnanti. This is called the third absorption.ā
So khvÄhaį¹, Ävuso, pÄ«tiyÄ ca virÄgÄ upekkhako ca viharÄmi sato ca sampajÄno sukhaƱca kÄyena paį¹isaį¹vedemi. Yaį¹ taį¹ ariyÄ Äcikkhanti: āupekkhako satimÄ sukhavihÄrÄ«āti tatiyaį¹ jhÄnaį¹ upasampajja viharÄmi. And so ā¦ I was entering and remaining in the third absorption.
Tassa mayhaį¹, Ävuso, iminÄ vihÄrena viharato pÄ«tisahagatÄ saƱƱÄmanasikÄrÄ samudÄcaranti. While I was in that meditation, perception and focus accompanied by rapture beset me.
Atha kho maį¹, Ävuso, bhagavÄ iddhiyÄ upasaį¹
kamitvÄ etadavoca: Then the Buddha came up to me with his psychic power and said,
āmoggallÄna, moggallÄna. āMoggallÄna, MoggallÄna!
MÄ, brÄhmaį¹a, tatiyaį¹ jhÄnaį¹ pamÄdo, tatiye jhÄne cittaį¹ saį¹į¹hapehi, tatiye jhÄne cittaį¹ ekodiį¹ karohi, tatiye jhÄne cittaį¹ samÄdahÄāti. Donāt neglect the third absorption, brahmin! Settle your mind in the third absorption; unify your mind and immerse it in the third absorption.ā
So khvÄhaį¹, Ävuso, aparena samayena pÄ«tiyÄ ca virÄgÄ upekkhako ca viharÄmi sato ca sampajÄno sukhaƱca kÄyena paį¹isaį¹vedemi, yaį¹ taį¹ ariyÄ Äcikkhanti: āupekkhako satimÄ sukhavihÄrÄ«āti tatiyaį¹ jhÄnaį¹ upasampajja vihÄsiį¹. And so, after some time ā¦ I entered and remained in the third absorption.
YaƱhi taį¹ Ävuso sammÄ vadamÄno vadeyya ā¦peā¦ mahÄbhiƱƱataį¹ pattoāti. So if anyone should be rightly called a disciple who attained to great direct knowledge with help from the Teacher, itās me.ā
Tatiyaį¹.
