CatutthajhānapaƱhāsutta A Question About the Fourth Absorption

ā€œā€˜Catutthaį¹ jhānaį¹, catutthaį¹ jhānanā€™ti vuccati. ā€œThey speak of this thing called the ā€˜fourth absorptionā€™.

Katamaį¹ nu kho catutthaį¹ jhānanti? What is the fourth absorption?

Tassa mayhaį¹, āvuso, etadahosi: It occurred to me:

ā€˜idha bhikkhu sukhassa ca pahānā dukkhassa ca pahānā pubbeva somanassadomanassānaį¹ atthaį¹…gamā adukkhamasukhaį¹ upekkhāsatipārisuddhiį¹ catutthaį¹ jhānaį¹ upasampajja viharati. ā€˜Itā€™s when, giving up pleasure and pain, and ending former happiness and sadness, a mendicant enters and remains in the fourth absorption, without pleasure or pain, with pure equanimity and mindfulness.

Idaį¹ vuccati catutthaį¹ jhānanā€™ti. This is called the fourth absorption.ā€™

So khvāhaį¹, āvuso, sukhassa ca pahānā dukkhassa ca pahānā pubbeva somanassadomanassānaį¹ atthaį¹…gamā adukkhamasukhaį¹ upekkhāsatipārisuddhiį¹ catutthaį¹ jhānaį¹ upasampajja viharāmi. And so ā€¦ I was entering and remaining in the fourth absorption.

Tassa mayhaį¹, āvuso, iminā vihārena viharato sukhasahagatā saƱƱāmanasikārā samudācaranti. While I was in that meditation, perception and focus accompanied by pleasure beset me.

Atha kho maį¹, āvuso, bhagavā iddhiyā upasaį¹…kamitvā etadavoca: Then the Buddha came up to me with his psychic power and said,

ā€˜moggallāna, moggallāna. ā€˜Moggallāna, Moggallāna!

Mā, brāhmaį¹‡a, catutthaį¹ jhānaį¹ pamādo, catutthe jhāne cittaį¹ saį¹‡į¹hapehi, catutthe jhāne cittaį¹ ekodiį¹ karohi, catutthe jhāne cittaį¹ samādahāā€™ti. Donā€™t neglect the fourth absorption, brahmin! Settle your mind in the fourth absorption; unify your mind and immerse it in the fourth absorption.ā€™

So khvāhaį¹, āvuso, aparena samayena sukhassa ca pahānā dukkhassa ca pahānā pubbeva somanassadomanassānaį¹ atthaį¹…gamā adukkhamasukhaį¹ upekkhāsatipārisuddhiį¹ catutthaį¹ jhānaį¹ upasampajja vihāsiį¹. And so, after some time ā€¦ I entered and remained in the fourth absorption.

YaƱhi taį¹, āvuso, sammā vadamāno vadeyya ā€¦peā€¦ mahābhiƱƱataį¹ pattoā€ti. So if anyone should be rightly called a disciple who attained to great direct knowledge with help from the Teacher, itā€™s me.ā€

Catutthaį¹.
