CatutthajhÄnapaƱhÄsutta A Question About the Fourth Absorption
āāCatutthaį¹ jhÄnaį¹, catutthaį¹ jhÄnanāti vuccati. āThey speak of this thing called the āfourth absorptionā.
Katamaį¹ nu kho catutthaį¹ jhÄnanti? What is the fourth absorption?
Tassa mayhaį¹, Ävuso, etadahosi: It occurred to me:
āidha bhikkhu sukhassa ca pahÄnÄ dukkhassa ca pahÄnÄ pubbeva somanassadomanassÄnaį¹ atthaį¹
gamÄ adukkhamasukhaį¹ upekkhÄsatipÄrisuddhiį¹ catutthaį¹ jhÄnaį¹ upasampajja viharati. āItās when, giving up pleasure and pain, and ending former happiness and sadness, a mendicant enters and remains in the fourth absorption, without pleasure or pain, with pure equanimity and mindfulness.
Idaį¹ vuccati catutthaį¹ jhÄnanāti. This is called the fourth absorption.ā
So khvÄhaį¹, Ävuso, sukhassa ca pahÄnÄ dukkhassa ca pahÄnÄ pubbeva somanassadomanassÄnaį¹ atthaį¹
gamÄ adukkhamasukhaį¹ upekkhÄsatipÄrisuddhiį¹ catutthaį¹ jhÄnaį¹ upasampajja viharÄmi. And so ā¦ I was entering and remaining in the fourth absorption.
Tassa mayhaį¹, Ävuso, iminÄ vihÄrena viharato sukhasahagatÄ saƱƱÄmanasikÄrÄ samudÄcaranti. While I was in that meditation, perception and focus accompanied by pleasure beset me.
Atha kho maį¹, Ävuso, bhagavÄ iddhiyÄ upasaį¹
kamitvÄ etadavoca: Then the Buddha came up to me with his psychic power and said,
āmoggallÄna, moggallÄna. āMoggallÄna, MoggallÄna!
MÄ, brÄhmaį¹a, catutthaį¹ jhÄnaį¹ pamÄdo, catutthe jhÄne cittaį¹ saį¹į¹hapehi, catutthe jhÄne cittaį¹ ekodiį¹ karohi, catutthe jhÄne cittaį¹ samÄdahÄāti. Donāt neglect the fourth absorption, brahmin! Settle your mind in the fourth absorption; unify your mind and immerse it in the fourth absorption.ā
So khvÄhaį¹, Ävuso, aparena samayena sukhassa ca pahÄnÄ dukkhassa ca pahÄnÄ pubbeva somanassadomanassÄnaį¹ atthaį¹
gamÄ adukkhamasukhaį¹ upekkhÄsatipÄrisuddhiį¹ catutthaį¹ jhÄnaį¹ upasampajja vihÄsiį¹. And so, after some time ā¦ I entered and remained in the fourth absorption.
YaƱhi taį¹, Ävuso, sammÄ vadamÄno vadeyya ā¦peā¦ mahÄbhiƱƱataį¹ pattoāti. So if anyone should be rightly called a disciple who attained to great direct knowledge with help from the Teacher, itās me.ā
