AnimittapaƱhÄsutta A Question About the Signless
āāAnimitto cetosamÄdhi, animitto cetosamÄdhÄ«āti vuccati. āThey speak of this thing called the āsignless immersion of the heartā.
Katamo nu kho animitto cetosamÄdhÄ«ti? What is the signless immersion of the heart?
Tassa mayhaį¹, Ävuso, etadahosi: It occurred to me:
āidha bhikkhu sabbanimittÄnaį¹ amanasikÄrÄ animittaį¹ cetosamÄdhiį¹ upasampajja viharati. āItās when a mendicant, not focusing on any signs, enters and remains in the signless immersion of the heart.
Ayaį¹ vuccati animitto cetosamÄdhÄ«āti. This is called the signless immersion of the heart.ā
So khvÄhaį¹, Ävuso, sabbanimittÄnaį¹ amanasikÄrÄ animittaį¹ cetosamÄdhiį¹ upasampajja viharÄmi. And so ā¦ I was entering and remaining in the signless immersion of the heart.
Tassa mayhaį¹, Ävuso, iminÄ vihÄrena viharato nimittÄnusÄri viƱƱÄį¹aį¹ hoti. While I was in that meditation, my consciousness followed after signs.
Atha kho maį¹, Ävuso, bhagavÄ iddhiyÄ upasaį¹
kamitvÄ etadavoca: Then the Buddha came up to me with his psychic power and said,
āmoggallÄna, moggallÄna. āMoggallÄna, MoggallÄna!
MÄ, brÄhmaį¹a, animittaį¹ cetosamÄdhiį¹ pamÄdo, animitte cetosamÄdhismiį¹ cittaį¹ saį¹į¹hapehi, animitte cetosamÄdhismiį¹ cittaį¹ ekodiį¹ karohi, animitte cetosamÄdhismiį¹ cittaį¹ samÄdahÄāti. Donāt neglect the signless immersion of the heart, brahmin! Settle your mind in the signless immersion of the heart; unify your mind and immerse it in the signless immersion of the heart.ā
So khvÄhaį¹, Ävuso, aparena samayena sabbanimittÄnaį¹ amanasikÄrÄ animittaį¹ cetosamÄdhiį¹ upasampajja vihÄsiį¹. And so, after some time ā¦ I entered and remained in the signless immersion of the heart.
YaƱhi taį¹, Ävuso, sammÄ vadamÄno vadeyya: So if anyone should be rightly called
āsatthÄrÄnuggahito sÄvako mahÄbhiƱƱataį¹ pattoāti, mamaį¹ taį¹ sammÄ vadamÄno vadeyya: a disciple who attained to great direct knowledge with help from the Teacher, itās me.ā
āsatthÄrÄnuggahito sÄvako mahÄbhiƱƱataį¹ pattoāāti.
Navamaį¹.
