AnimittapaƱhāsutta A Question About the Signless

ā€œā€˜Animitto cetosamādhi, animitto cetosamādhÄ«ā€™ti vuccati. ā€œThey speak of this thing called the ā€˜signless immersion of the heartā€™.

Katamo nu kho animitto cetosamādhīti? What is the signless immersion of the heart?

Tassa mayhaį¹, āvuso, etadahosi: It occurred to me:

ā€˜idha bhikkhu sabbanimittānaį¹ amanasikārā animittaį¹ cetosamādhiį¹ upasampajja viharati. ā€˜Itā€™s when a mendicant, not focusing on any signs, enters and remains in the signless immersion of the heart.

Ayaį¹ vuccati animitto cetosamādhÄ«ā€™ti. This is called the signless immersion of the heart.ā€™

So khvāhaį¹, āvuso, sabbanimittānaį¹ amanasikārā animittaį¹ cetosamādhiį¹ upasampajja viharāmi. And so ā€¦ I was entering and remaining in the signless immersion of the heart.

Tassa mayhaį¹, āvuso, iminā vihārena viharato nimittānusāri viƱƱāį¹‡aį¹ hoti. While I was in that meditation, my consciousness followed after signs.

Atha kho maį¹, āvuso, bhagavā iddhiyā upasaį¹…kamitvā etadavoca: Then the Buddha came up to me with his psychic power and said,

ā€˜moggallāna, moggallāna. ā€˜Moggallāna, Moggallāna!

Mā, brāhmaį¹‡a, animittaį¹ cetosamādhiį¹ pamādo, animitte cetosamādhismiį¹ cittaį¹ saį¹‡į¹hapehi, animitte cetosamādhismiį¹ cittaį¹ ekodiį¹ karohi, animitte cetosamādhismiį¹ cittaį¹ samādahāā€™ti. Donā€™t neglect the signless immersion of the heart, brahmin! Settle your mind in the signless immersion of the heart; unify your mind and immerse it in the signless immersion of the heart.ā€™

So khvāhaį¹, āvuso, aparena samayena sabbanimittānaį¹ amanasikārā animittaį¹ cetosamādhiį¹ upasampajja vihāsiį¹. And so, after some time ā€¦ I entered and remained in the signless immersion of the heart.

YaƱhi taį¹, āvuso, sammā vadamāno vadeyya: So if anyone should be rightly called

ā€˜satthārānuggahito sāvako mahābhiƱƱataį¹ pattoā€™ti, mamaį¹ taį¹ sammā vadamāno vadeyya: a disciple who attained to great direct knowledge with help from the Teacher, itā€™s me.ā€

ā€˜satthārānuggahito sāvako mahābhiƱƱataį¹ pattoā€™ā€ti.

Navamaį¹.
