Gilānadassanasutta Seeing the Sick

Tena kho pana samayena citto gahapati ābādhiko hoti dukkhito bāįø·hagilāno. Now at that time the householder Citta was sick, suffering, gravely ill.

Atha kho sambahulā ārāmadevatā vanadevatā rukkhadevatā osadhitiį¹‡avanappatÄ«su adhivatthā devatā saį¹…gamma samāgamma cittaį¹ gahapatiį¹ etadavocuį¹: Then several deities of the parks, forests, trees, and those who haunt the herbs, grass, and big trees came together and said to Citta,

ā€œpaį¹‡idhehi, gahapati, anāgatamaddhānaį¹ rājā assaį¹ cakkavattÄ«ā€ti. ā€œHouseholder, make a wish to become a wheel-turning monarch in the future!ā€

Evaį¹ vutte, citto gahapati tā ārāmadevatā vanadevatā rukkhadevatā osadhitiį¹‡avanappatÄ«su adhivatthā devatā etadavoca: When they said this, Citta said to them,

ā€œtampi aniccaį¹, tampi addhuvaį¹, tampi pahāya gamanÄ«yanā€ti. ā€œThat too is impermanent! That too will pass! That too will be left behind!ā€

Evaį¹ vutte, cittassa gahapatino mittāmaccā Ʊātisālohitā cittaį¹ gahapatiį¹ etadavocuį¹: When he said this, his friends and colleagues, relatives and kin said,

ā€œsatiį¹, ayyaputta, upaį¹­į¹­hapehi, mā vippalapÄ«ā€ti. ā€œBe mindful, master! Donā€™t babble.ā€

ā€œKiį¹ tāhaį¹ vadāmi yaį¹ maį¹ tumhe evaį¹ vadetha: ā€œWhat have I said that makes you say that?ā€

ā€˜satiį¹, ayyaputta, upaį¹­į¹­hapehi, mā vippalapÄ«ā€™ā€ti?

ā€œEvaį¹ kho tvaį¹, ayyaputta, vadesi: ā€œItā€™s because you said:

ā€˜tampi aniccaį¹, tampi addhuvaį¹, tampi pahāya gamanÄ«yanā€™ā€ti. ā€˜That too is impermanent! That too will pass! That too will be left behind!ā€™ā€

ā€œTathā hi pana maį¹ ārāmadevatā vanadevatā rukkhadevatā osadhitiį¹‡avanappatÄ«su adhivatthā devatā evamāhaį¹su: ā€œOh, well, thatā€™s because the deities of the parks, forests, trees, and those who haunt the herbs, grass, and big trees said to me:

ā€˜paį¹‡idhehi, gahapati, anāgatamaddhānaį¹ rājā assaį¹ cakkavattÄ«ā€™ti. ā€˜Householder, make a wish to become a wheel-turning monarch in the future!ā€™

Tāhaį¹ evaį¹ vadāmi: So I said to them:

ā€˜tampi aniccaį¹ ā€¦peā€¦ tampi pahāya gamanÄ«yanā€™ā€ti. ā€˜That too is impermanent! That too will pass! That too will be left behind!ā€™ā€

ā€œKiį¹ pana tā, ayyaputta, ārāmadevatā vanadevatā rukkhadevatā osadhitiį¹‡avanappatÄ«su adhivatthā devatā atthavasaį¹ sampassamānā evamāhaį¹su: ā€œBut what reason do they see for saying that to you?ā€

ā€˜paį¹‡idhehi, gahapati, anāgatamaddhānaį¹ rājā assaį¹ cakkavattÄ«ā€™ā€ti?

ā€œTāsaį¹ kho ārāmadevatānaį¹ vanadevatānaį¹ rukkhadevatānaį¹ osadhitiį¹‡avanappatÄ«su adhivatthānaį¹ devatānaį¹ evaį¹ hoti: ā€œThey think:

ā€˜ayaį¹ kho citto gahapati, sÄ«lavā kalyāį¹‡adhammo. ā€˜This householder Citta is ethical, of good character.

Sace paį¹‡idahissatiā€”If he makes a wish to

anāgatamaddhānaį¹ rājā assaį¹ cakkavattÄ«ā€™ti, ā€˜tassa kho ayaį¹ ijjhissati, sÄ«lavato cetopaį¹‡idhi visuddhattā dhammiko dhammikaį¹ phalaį¹ anupassatÄ«ā€™ti. become a wheel-turning monarch in the future, his heartā€™s wish will succeed because of the purity of his ethics. And then as a proper, principled king he will provide proper spirit-offerings.ā€™

Imaį¹ kho tā ārāmadevatā vanadevatā rukkhadevatā osadhitiį¹‡avanappatÄ«su adhivatthā devatā atthavasaį¹ sampassamānā evamāhaį¹su: Thatā€™s the reason they see for saying to me:

ā€˜paį¹‡idhehi, gahapati, anāgatamaddhānaį¹ rājā assaį¹ cakkavattÄ«ā€™ti. ā€˜Householder, make a wish to become a wheel-turning monarch in the future!ā€™

Tāhaį¹ evaį¹ vadāmi: So I said to them:

ā€˜tampi aniccaį¹, tampi addhuvaį¹, tampi pahāya gamanÄ«yanā€™ā€ti. ā€˜That too is impermanent! That too will pass! That too will be left behind!ā€™ā€

ā€œTena hi, ayyaputta, amhepi ovadāhÄ«ā€ti. ā€œThen, master, advise us!ā€

ā€œTasmā hi vo evaį¹ sikkhitabbaį¹ā€”ā€œSo you should train like this:

buddhe aveccappasādena samannāgatā bhavissāma: We will have experiential confidence in the Buddha:

ā€˜itipi so bhagavā arahaį¹ sammāsambuddho vijjācaraį¹‡asampanno sugato lokavidÅ« anuttaro purisadammasārathi satthā devamanussānaį¹ buddho bhagavāā€™ti. ā€˜That Blessed One is perfected, a fully awakened Buddha, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, holy, knower of the world, supreme guide for those who wish to train, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, blessed.ā€™

Dhamme aveccappasādena samannāgatā bhavissāma: We will have experiential confidence in the teaching:

ā€˜svākkhāto bhagavatā dhammo sandiį¹­į¹­hiko akāliko ehipassiko opaneyyiko paccattaį¹ veditabbo viĆ±Ć±Å«hÄ«ā€™ti. ā€˜The teaching is well explained by the Buddhaā€”apparent in the present life, immediately effective, inviting inspection, relevant, so that sensible people can know it for themselves.ā€™

Saį¹…ghe aveccappasādena samannāgatā bhavissāma: We will have experiential confidence in the Saį¹…gha:

ā€˜suppaį¹­ipanno bhagavato sāvakasaį¹…gho, ujuppaį¹­ipanno bhagavato sāvakasaį¹…gho, Ʊāyappaį¹­ipanno bhagavato sāvakasaį¹…gho, sāmÄ«cippaį¹­ipanno bhagavato sāvakasaį¹…gho, yadidaį¹ cattāri purisayugāni aį¹­į¹­ha purisapuggalā esa bhagavato sāvakasaį¹…gho āhuneyyo pāhuneyyo dakkhiį¹‡eyyo aƱjalikaraį¹‡Ä«yo anuttaraį¹ puƱƱakkhettaį¹ lokassāā€™ti. ā€˜The Saį¹…gha of the Buddhaā€™s disciples is practicing the way thatā€™s good, sincere, systematic, and proper. It consists of the four pairs, the eight individuals. This is the Saį¹…gha of the Buddhaā€™s disciples that is worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods, worthy of hospitality, worthy of a religious donation, worthy of greeting with joined palms, and is the supreme field of merit for the world.ā€™

Yaį¹ kho pana kiƱci kule deyyadhammaį¹ sabbaį¹ taį¹ appaį¹­ivibhattaį¹ bhavissati sÄ«lavantehi kalyāį¹‡adhammehÄ«ti evaƱhi vo sikkhitabbanā€ti. And we will share without reservation all the gifts available to give in our family with those who are ethical and of good character.ā€

Atha kho citto gahapati mittāmacce Ʊātisālohite buddhe ca dhamme ca saį¹…ghe ca cāge ca samādapetvā kālamakāsÄ«ti. Then, after Citta had encouraged his friends and colleagues, relatives and kin in the Buddha, the teaching, the Saį¹…gha, and generosity, he passed away.

Mahako kāmabhūpi ca;
