ā€œsutaį¹ metaį¹, bhante, pubbakānaį¹ ācariyapācariyānaį¹ yodhājÄ«vānaį¹ bhāsamānānaį¹: ā€œSir, I have heard that the warriors of the past who were tutors of tutors said:

ā€˜yo so yodhājÄ«vo saį¹…gāme ussahati vāyamati, tamenaį¹ ussahantaį¹ vāyamantaį¹ pare hananti pariyāpādenti, so kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä parajitānaį¹ devānaį¹ sahabyataį¹ upapajjatÄ«ā€™ti. ā€˜Suppose a warrior, while striving and struggling in battle, is killed and finished off by his foes. When his body breaks up, after death, heā€™s reborn in the company of the gods of the fallen.ā€™

Idha bhagavā kimāhāā€ti? What does the Buddha say about this?ā€

ā€œAlaį¹, gāmaį¹‡i, tiį¹į¹hatetaį¹; mā maį¹ etaį¹ pucchÄ«ā€ti. ā€œEnough, chief, let it be. Donā€™t ask me that.ā€

When his body breaks up, after death, heā€™s reborn in the company of the gods of the fallen.ā€™

Idha bhagavā kimāhāā€ti? What does the Buddha say about this?ā€

ā€œAddhā kho tyāhaį¹, gāmaį¹‡i, na labhāmi: ā€œClearly, chief, Iā€™m not getting through to you when I say:

ā€˜alaį¹, gāmaį¹‡i, tiį¹į¹hatetaį¹; mā maį¹ etaį¹ pucchÄ«ā€™ti. ā€˜Enough, chief, let it be. Donā€™t ask me that.ā€™

Api ca tyāhaį¹ byākarissāmi. Nevertheless, I will answer you.

Yo so, gāmaį¹‡i, yodhājÄ«vo saį¹…gāme ussahati vāyamati, tassa taį¹ cittaį¹ pubbe gahitaį¹ dukkaį¹aį¹ duppaį¹‡ihitaį¹: When a warrior strives and struggles in battle, their mind is already low, degraded, and misdirected as they think:

ā€˜ime sattā haƱƱantu vā bajjhantu vā ucchijjantu vā vinassantu vā mā vā ahesuį¹ iti vāā€™ti. ā€˜May these sentient beings be killed, slaughtered, slain, destroyed, or annihilated!ā€™

Tamenaį¹ ussahantaį¹ vāyamantaį¹ pare hananti pariyāpādenti; His foes kill him and finish him off, and

so kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä parajito nāma nirayo tattha upapajjatÄ«ti. when his body breaks up, after death, heā€™s reborn in the hell called ā€˜The Fallenā€™.

Sace kho panassa evaį¹ diį¹į¹hi hoti: But if you have such a view:

ā€˜yo so yodhājÄ«vo saį¹…gāme ussahati vāyamati tamenaį¹ ussahantaį¹ vāyamantaį¹ pare hananti pariyāpādenti, so kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä parajitānaį¹ devānaį¹ sahabyataį¹ upapajjatÄ«ā€™ti, sāssa hoti micchādiį¹į¹hi. ā€˜Suppose a warrior, while striving and struggling in battle, is killed and finished off by his foes. When his body breaks up, after death, heā€™s reborn in the company of the gods of the fallen.ā€™ This is your wrong view.

Micchādiį¹į¹hikassa kho panāhaį¹, gāmaį¹‡i, purisapuggalassa dvinnaį¹ gatÄ«naį¹ aƱƱataraį¹ gatiį¹ vadāmiā€”An individual with wrong view is reborn in one of two places, I say:

Evaį¹ vutte, yodhājÄ«vo gāmaį¹‡i parodi, assÅ«ni pavattesi. When he said this, Dustin the warrior chief cried and burst out in tears.

ā€œEtaį¹ kho tyāhaį¹, gāmaį¹‡i, nālatthaį¹: ā€œThis is what I didnā€™t get through to you when I said:

ā€˜alaį¹, gāmaį¹‡i, tiį¹į¹hatetaį¹; mā maį¹ etaį¹ pucchÄ«ā€™ā€ti. ā€˜Enough, chief, let it be. Donā€™t ask me that.ā€™ā€

ā€œNāhaį¹, bhante, etaį¹ rodāmi yaį¹ maį¹ bhagavā evamāha; ā€œSir, Iā€™m not crying because of what the Buddha said.

api cāhaį¹, bhante, pubbakehi ācariyapācariyehi yodhājÄ«vehi dÄ«gharattaį¹ nikato vaƱcito paluddho: But sir, for a long time Iā€™ve been cheated, tricked, and deceived by the warriors of the past who were tutors of tutors, who said:

ā€˜yo so yodhājÄ«vo saį¹…gāme ussahati vāyamati, tamenaį¹ ussahantaį¹ vāyamantaį¹ pare hananti pariyāpādenti, so kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä parajitānaį¹ devānaį¹ sahabyataį¹ upapajjatÄ«ā€™ā€ti. ā€˜Suppose a warrior, while striving and struggling in battle, is killed and finished off by his foes. When his body breaks up, after death, heā€™s reborn in the company of the gods of the fallen.ā€™

ā€œAbhikkantaį¹, bhante ā€¦peā€¦ Excellent, sir! Excellent! ā€¦
