Atha kho assāroho gāmaį¹‡i yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho assāroho gāmaį¹‡i bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then a cavalry chief went up to the Buddha ā€¦

ā€œsutaį¹ metaį¹, bhante, pubbakānaį¹ ācariyapācariyānaį¹ assārohānaį¹ bhāsamānānaį¹:

ā€˜yo so assāroho saį¹…gāme ussahati vāyamati, tamenaį¹ ussahantaį¹ vāyamantaį¹ pare hananti pariyāpādenti, so kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä parajitānaį¹ devānaį¹ sahabyataį¹ upapajjatÄ«ā€™ti.

Idha bhagavā kimāhāā€ti?

ā€œAlaį¹, gāmaį¹‡i, tiį¹­į¹­hatetaį¹; mā maį¹ etaį¹ pucchÄ«ā€ti.

tatiyampi kho assāroho gāmaį¹‡i bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca:

ā€œAddhā kho tyāhaį¹, gāmaį¹‡i, na labhāmi:

ā€˜alaį¹, gāmaį¹‡i, tiį¹­į¹­hatetaį¹; mā maį¹ etaį¹ pucchÄ«ā€™ti.

Api ca kho tyāhaį¹ byākarissāmi.

Yo so, gāmaį¹‡i, assāroho saį¹…gāme ussahati vāyamati tassa taį¹ cittaį¹ pubbe gahitaį¹ dukkaį¹­aį¹ duppaį¹‡ihitaį¹:

ā€˜ime sattā haƱƱantu vā bajjhantu vā ucchijjantu vā vinassantu vā mā ahesuį¹ iti vāā€™ti.

Tamenaį¹ ussahantaį¹ vāyamantaį¹ pare hananti pariyāpādenti, so kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä parajito nāma nirayo tattha upapajjati.

Sace kho panassa evaį¹ diį¹­į¹­hi hoti:

ā€˜yo so assāroho saį¹…gāme ussahati vāyamati, tamenaį¹ ussahantaį¹ vāyamantaį¹ pare hananti pariyāpādenti, so kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä parajitānaį¹ devānaį¹ sahabyataį¹ upapajjatÄ«ā€™ti, sāssa hoti micchādiį¹­į¹­hi.

Micchādiį¹­į¹­hikassa kho panāhaį¹, gāmaį¹‡i, purisapuggalassa dvinnaį¹ gatÄ«naį¹ aƱƱataraį¹ gatiį¹ vadāmiā€”

nirayaį¹ vā tiracchānayoniį¹ vāā€ti.

Evaį¹ vutte, assāroho gāmaį¹‡i parodi, assÅ«ni pavattesi.

ā€œEtaį¹ kho tyāhaį¹, gāmaį¹‡i, nālatthaį¹:

ā€˜alaį¹, gāmaį¹‡i, tiį¹­į¹­hatetaį¹; mā maį¹ etaį¹ pucchÄ«ā€™ā€ti.

ā€œNāhaį¹, bhante, etaį¹ rodāmi yaį¹ maį¹ bhagavā evamāha.

Api cāhaį¹, bhante, pubbakehi ācariyapācariyehi assārohehi dÄ«gharattaį¹ nikato vaƱcito paluddho:

ā€˜yo so assāroho saį¹…gāme ussahati vāyamati, tamenaį¹ ussahantaį¹ vāyamantaį¹ pare hananti pariyāpādenti, so kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä parajitānaį¹ devānaį¹ sahabyataį¹ upapajjatÄ«ā€™ā€ti.

ā€œAbhikkantaį¹, bhante ā€¦peā€¦

ajjatagge pāį¹‡upetaį¹ saraį¹‡aį¹ gatanā€ti. ā€œFrom this day forth, may the Buddha remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.ā€
