Moggallānasutta With Moggallāna

Atha kho vacchagotto paribbājako yenāyasmā mahāmoggallāno tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā āyasmatā mahāmoggallānena saddhiį¹ sammodi. Then the wanderer Vacchagotta went up to Venerable Mahāmoggallāna, and exchanged greetings with him.

SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sāraį¹‡Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisāretvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho vacchagotto paribbājako āyasmantaį¹ mahāmoggallānaį¹ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side, and said to Mahāmoggallāna:

ā€œKiį¹ nu kho, bho moggallāna, sassato lokoā€ti? ā€œWorthy Moggallāna, is this right: ā€˜the cosmos is eternalā€™?ā€

ā€œAbyākataį¹ kho etaį¹, vaccha, bhagavatā: ā€œVaccha, this has not been declared by the Buddha.ā€

ā€˜sassato lokoā€™ā€ti.

ā€œKiį¹ pana, bho moggallāna, asassato lokoā€ti? ā€œThen is this right: ā€˜the cosmos is not eternalā€™ ā€¦

ā€œEtampi kho, vaccha, abyākataį¹ bhagavatā:

ā€˜asassato lokoā€™ā€ti.

ā€œKiį¹ nu kho, bho moggallāna, antavā lokoā€ti? ā€˜the cosmos is finiteā€™ ā€¦

ā€œAbyākataį¹ kho etaį¹, vaccha, bhagavatā:

ā€˜antavā lokoā€™ā€ti.

ā€œKiį¹ pana, bho moggallāna, anantavā lokoā€ti? ā€˜the cosmos is infiniteā€™ ā€¦

ā€œEtampi kho, vaccha, abyākataį¹ bhagavatā:

ā€˜anantavā lokoā€™ā€ti.

ā€œKiį¹ nu kho, bho moggallāna, taį¹ jÄ«vaį¹ taį¹ sarÄ«ranā€ti? ā€˜the soul and the body are identicalā€™ ā€¦

ā€œAbyākataį¹ kho etaį¹, vaccha, bhagavatā:

ā€˜taį¹ jÄ«vaį¹ taį¹ sarÄ«ranā€™ā€ti.

ā€˜hoti tathāgato paraį¹ maraį¹‡Äā€™ā€ti.

ā€œKiį¹ pana, bho moggallāna, na hoti tathāgato paraį¹ maraį¹‡Äā€ti? ā€˜a realized one no longer exists after deathā€™ ā€¦

ā€œEtampi kho, vaccha, abyākataį¹ bhagavatā:

ā€˜na hoti tathāgato paraį¹ maraį¹‡Äā€™ā€ti.

ā€œKiį¹ nu kho, bho moggallāna, hoti ca na ca hoti tathāgato paraį¹ maraį¹‡Äā€ti? ā€˜a realized one both still exists and no longer exists after deathā€™ ā€¦

ā€˜hoti ca na ca hoti tathāgato paraį¹ maraį¹‡Äā€™ā€ti.

ā€œKiį¹ pana, bho moggallāna, neva hoti na na hoti tathāgato paraį¹ maraį¹‡Äā€ti? ā€˜a realized one neither still exists nor no longer exists after deathā€™?ā€

ā€œEtampi kho, vaccha, abyākataį¹ bhagavatā: ā€œThis too has not been declared by the Buddha.ā€

ā€˜neva hoti na na hoti tathāgato paraį¹ maraį¹‡Äā€™ā€ti.

ā€œKo nu kho, bho moggallāna, hetu ko paccayo, yena aƱƱatitthiyānaį¹ paribbājakānaį¹ evaį¹ puį¹­į¹­hānaį¹ evaį¹ veyyākaraį¹‡aį¹ hotiā€”ā€œWhatā€™s the cause, worthy Moggallāna, whatā€™s the reason why, when the wanderers of other religions are asked these questions, they declare one of these to be true?

sassato lokoti vā, asassato lokoti vā, antavā lokoti vā, anantavā lokoti vā, taį¹ jÄ«vaį¹ taį¹ sarÄ«ranti vā, aƱƱaį¹ jÄ«vaį¹ aƱƱaį¹ sarÄ«ranti vā, hoti tathāgato paraį¹ maraį¹‡Äti vā, na hoti tathāgato paraį¹ maraį¹‡Äti vā, hoti ca na ca hoti tathāgato paraį¹ maraį¹‡Äti vā, neva hoti na na hoti tathāgato paraį¹ maraį¹‡Äti vā?

Ko pana, bho moggallāna, hetu ko paccayo, yena samaį¹‡assa gotamassa evaį¹ puį¹­į¹­hassa na evaį¹ veyyākaraį¹‡aį¹ hotiā€”And whatā€™s the reason why, when the ascetic Gotama is asked these questions, he does not declare one of these to be true?ā€

Tasmā aƱƱatitthiyānaį¹ paribbājakānaį¹ evaį¹ puį¹­į¹­hānaį¹ evaį¹ veyyākaraį¹‡aį¹ hotiā€”Thatā€™s why, when asked, they declare one of those answers to be true.

Atha kho vacchagotto paribbājako uį¹­į¹­hāyāsanā yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavatā saddhiį¹ sammodi. Then the wanderer Vacchagotta got up from his seat and went to the Buddha and exchanged greetings with him.

SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sāraį¹‡Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisāretvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho vacchagotto paribbājako bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side. He asked the Buddha the same questions, and received the same answers.

ā€œkiį¹ nu kho, bho gotama, sassato lokoā€ti?

ā€œAbyākataį¹ kho etaį¹, vaccha, mayā: ā€˜sassato lokoā€™ti ā€¦peā€¦.

ā€œKiį¹ pana, bho gotama, neva hoti na na hoti tathāgato paraį¹ maraį¹‡Äā€ti?

ā€œEtampi kho, vaccha, abyākataį¹ mayā:

ā€˜neva hoti na na hoti tathāgato paraį¹ maraį¹‡Äā€™ā€ti.

ā€œKo nu kho, bho gotama, hetu ko paccayo, yena aƱƱatitthiyānaį¹ paribbājakānaį¹ evaį¹ puį¹­į¹­hānaį¹ evaį¹ veyyākaraį¹‡aį¹ hoti:

ā€˜neva hoti na na hoti tathāgato paraį¹ maraį¹‡Äā€™tipÄ«ā€ti?

ā€œAcchariyaį¹, bho gotama, abbhutaį¹, bho gotama. He said, ā€œItā€™s incredible, worthy Gotama, itā€™s amazing!

Yatra hi nāma satthu ca sāvakassa ca atthena attho byaƱjanena byaƱjanaį¹ saį¹sandissati samessati na virodhayissati, yadidaį¹ aggapadasmiį¹. How the meaning and the phrasing of the teacher and the disciple fit together and agree without contradiction when it comes to the chief matter!

Idānāhaį¹, bho gotama, samaį¹‡aį¹ mahāmoggallānaį¹ upasaį¹…kamitvā etamatthaį¹ apucchiį¹. Just now I went to the ascetic Mahāmoggallāna and asked him about this matter.

Samaį¹‡opi me moggallāno etehi padehi etehi byaƱjanehi tamatthaį¹ byākāsi, seyyathāpi bhavaį¹ gotamo. And he explained it to me with these words and phrases, just like the worthy Gotama.

Acchariyaį¹, bho gotama, abbhutaį¹, bho gotama. Itā€™s incredible, worthy Gotama, itā€™s amazing!
