Vacchagottasutta With Vacchagotta

Atha kho vacchagotto paribbājako yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavatā saddhiį¹ sammodi. Then the wanderer Vacchagotta went up to the Buddha and exchanged greetings with him.

SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sāraį¹‡Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisāretvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho vacchagotto paribbājako bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side, and said to the Buddha:

ā€œkiį¹ nu kho, bho gotama, sassato lokoā€ti? ā€œWorthy Gotama, is this right: ā€˜the cosmos is eternalā€™?ā€

ā€œAbyākataį¹ kho etaį¹, vaccha, mayā: ā€˜sassato lokoā€™ti ā€¦peā€¦. ā€œThis has not been declared by me, Vaccha.ā€ ā€¦

ā€œKiį¹ pana, bho gotama, ā€˜neva hoti na na hoti tathāgato paraį¹ maraį¹‡Äā€™ā€ti? ā€œThen is this right: ā€˜a realized one neither still exists nor no longer exists after deathā€™?ā€

ā€œEtampi kho, vaccha, abyākataį¹ mayā: ā€œThis too has not been declared by me.ā€

ā€˜neva hoti na na hoti tathāgato paraį¹ maraį¹‡Äā€™ā€ti.

ā€œKo nu kho, bho gotama, hetu, ko paccayo, yena aƱƱatitthiyānaį¹ paribbājakānaį¹ evaį¹ puį¹­į¹­hānaį¹ evaį¹ veyyākaraį¹‡aį¹ hoti: ā€œWhatā€™s the cause, worthy Gotama, whatā€™s the reason why, when the wanderers of other religions are asked these questions, they declare one of these to be true?

Ko pana, bho gotama, hetu, ko paccayo, yena bhoto gotamassa evaį¹ puį¹­į¹­hassa na evaį¹ veyyākaraį¹‡aį¹ hoti: And whatā€™s the reason why, when the worthy Gotama is asked these questions, he does not declare one of these to be true?ā€

Atha kho vacchagotto paribbājako uį¹­į¹­hāyāsanā yenāyasmā mahāmoggallāno tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā āyasmatā mahāmoggallānena saddhiį¹ sammodi. Then the wanderer Vacchagotta got up from his seat and went to Venerable Mahāmoggallāna, and exchanged greetings with him.

SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sāraį¹‡Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisāretvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho vacchagotto paribbājako āyasmantaį¹ mahāmoggallānaį¹ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side. ā€œAcchariyaį¹, bho moggallāna, abbhutaį¹, bho moggallāna. He said, ā€œItā€™s incredible, worthy Moggallāna, itā€™s amazing.

Yatra hi nāma satthu ca sāvakassa ca atthena attho byaƱjanena byaƱjanaį¹ saį¹sandissati, samessati, na virodhayissati, yadidaį¹ aggapadasmiį¹. How the meaning and the phrasing of the teacher and the disciple fit together and agree without contradiction when it comes to the chief matter!

Idānāhaį¹, bho moggallāna, samaį¹‡aį¹ gotamaį¹ upasaį¹…kamitvā etamatthaį¹ apucchiį¹. Just now I went to the ascetic Gotama and asked him about this matter.

Samaį¹‡opi me gotamo etehi padehi etehi byaƱjanehi etamatthaį¹ byākāsi, seyyathāpi bhavaį¹ moggallāno. And he explained it to me with these words and phrases, just like the worthy Moggallāna.

Acchariyaį¹, bho moggallāna, abbhutaį¹, bho moggallāna. Itā€™s incredible, worthy Moggallāna, itā€™s amazing!
