Kutūhalasālāsutta The Debating Hall

Atha kho vacchagotto paribbājako yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavatā saddhiį¹ sammodi. Then the wanderer Vacchagotta went up to the Buddha and exchanged greetings with him.

SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sāraį¹‡Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisāretvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho vacchagotto paribbājako bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side, and said to the Buddha:

ā€œPurimāni, bho gotama, divasāni purimatarāni sambahulānaį¹ nānātitthiyānaį¹ samaį¹‡abrāhmaį¹‡Änaį¹ paribbājakānaį¹ kutÅ«halasālāyaį¹ sannisinnānaį¹ sannipatitānaį¹ ayamantarākathā udapādi: ā€œWorthy Gotama, a few days ago several ascetics, brahmins, and wanderers who follow various other religions were sitting together in the debating hall, and this discussion came up among them:

ā€˜ayaį¹ kho pÅ«raį¹‡o kassapo saį¹…ghÄ« ceva gaį¹‡Ä« ca gaį¹‡Äcariyo ca Ʊāto yasassÄ« titthakaro sādhusammato bahujanassa. ā€˜This PÅ«raį¹‡a Kassapa leads an order and a community, and tutors a community. Heā€™s a well-known and famous religious founder, deemed holy by many people.

Sopi sāvakaį¹ abbhatÄ«taį¹ kālaį¹…kataį¹ upapattÄ«su byākaroti: When a disciple passes away, he declares that

ā€œasu amutra upapanno, asu amutra upapannoā€ti. this one is reborn here, while that one is reborn there.

Yopissa sāvako uttamapuriso paramapuriso paramapattipatto tampi sāvakaį¹ abbhatÄ«taį¹ kālaį¹…kataį¹ upapattÄ«su byākaroti: And as for a disciple who is a supreme person, highest of people, having reached the highest point, when they pass away he also declares that

ā€œasu amutra upapanno, asu amutra upapannoā€ti. this one is reborn here, while that one is reborn there.

Ayampi kho makkhali gosālo ā€¦peā€¦ This bamboo-staffed ascetic Gosāla ā€¦

ayampi kho ajito kesakambalo saį¹…ghÄ« ceva gaį¹‡Ä« ca gaį¹‡Äcariyo ca Ʊāto yasassÄ« titthakaro sādhusammato bahujanassa. Ajita of the hair blanket leads an order and a community, and tutors a community. Heā€™s a well-known and famous religious founder, deemed holy by many people.

ā€˜asu amutra upapanno, asu amutra upapannoā€™ti. this one is reborn here, while that one is reborn there.

Api ca kho naį¹ evaį¹ byākaroti: Rather, he declares that they have

ā€˜acchecchi taį¹‡haį¹, vivattayi saį¹yojanaį¹, sammā mānābhisamayā antamakāsi dukkhassāā€™ti. cut off craving, untied the fetters, and by rightly comprehending conceit have made an end of suffering.ā€™

Tassa mayhaį¹, bho gotama, ahu deva kaį¹…khā, ahu vicikicchā: I had doubt and uncertainty about that:

ā€˜kathaį¹ nāma samaį¹‡assa gotamassa dhammo abhiƱƱeyyoā€™ā€ti? ā€˜How on earth can I understand the ascetic Gotamaā€™s teaching?ā€™ā€

ā€œAlaƱhi te, vaccha, kaį¹…khituį¹, alaį¹ vicikicchituį¹. ā€œVaccha, no wonder youā€™re doubting and uncertain.

Kaį¹…khanÄ«ye ca pana te į¹­hāne vicikicchā uppannā. Doubt has come up in you about an uncertain matter.

Saupādānassa khvāhaį¹, vaccha, upapattiį¹ paƱƱāpemi no anupādānassa. I describe rebirth for someone who has fuel for grasping, not for someone who does not.

Seyyathāpi, vaccha, aggi saupādāno jalati, no anupādāno; Itā€™s like a fire which only burns with fuel, not without fuel.

evameva khvāhaį¹, vaccha, saupādānassa upapattiį¹ paƱƱāpemi, no anupādānassāā€ti. In the same way I describe rebirth for someone who grasps fuel, not for someone who doesnā€™t grasp fuel.ā€

ā€œYasmiį¹, bho gotama, samaye acci vātena khittā dÅ«rampi gacchati, imassa pana bhavaį¹ gotamo kiį¹ upādānasmiį¹ paƱƱāpetÄ«ā€ti? ā€œBut when a flame is blown away by the wind, what does the worthy Gotama say is its fuel then?ā€

ā€œYasmiį¹ kho, vaccha, samaye acci vātena khittā dÅ«rampi gacchati, tamahaį¹ vātÅ«pādānaį¹ paƱƱāpemi. ā€œAt such a time, I say that itā€™s fueled by the wind.

Vāto hissa, vaccha, tasmiį¹ samaye upādānaį¹ hotÄ«ā€ti. For the wind is its fuel then.ā€

ā€œYasmiƱca pana, bho gotama, samaye imaƱca kāyaį¹ nikkhipati, satto ca aƱƱataraį¹ kāyaį¹ anupapanno hoti, imassa pana bhavaį¹ gotamo kiį¹ upādānasmiį¹ paƱƱāpetÄ«ā€ti? ā€œBut when someone who is attached has laid down this body and has not been reborn in one of the realms, what does the worthy Gotama say is their fuel then?ā€

ā€œYasmiį¹ kho, vaccha, samaye imaƱca kāyaį¹ nikkhipati, satto ca aƱƱataraį¹ kāyaį¹ anupapanno hoti, tamahaį¹ taį¹‡hÅ«pādānaį¹ vadāmi. ā€œWhen someone who is attached has laid down this body, Vaccha, and has not been reborn in one of the realms, I say theyā€™re fueled by craving.

Taį¹‡hā hissa, vaccha, tasmiį¹ samaye upādānaį¹ hotÄ«ā€ti. For craving is their fuel then.ā€
