Atha kho vacchagotto paribbÄjako yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹

kamitvÄ bhagavatÄ saddhiį¹ sammodi. Then the wanderer Vacchagotta went up to the Buddha and exchanged greetings with him.
SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sÄraį¹Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisÄretvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho vacchagotto paribbÄjako bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side, and said to the Buddha:
āPurimÄni, bho gotama, divasÄni purimatarÄni sambahulÄnaį¹ nÄnÄtitthiyÄnaį¹ samaį¹abrÄhmaį¹Änaį¹ paribbÄjakÄnaį¹ kutÅ«halasÄlÄyaį¹ sannisinnÄnaį¹ sannipatitÄnaį¹ ayamantarÄkathÄ udapÄdi: āWorthy Gotama, a few days ago several ascetics, brahmins, and wanderers who follow various other religions were sitting together in the debating hall, and this discussion came up among them:
āayaį¹ kho pÅ«raį¹o kassapo saį¹
ghÄ« ceva gaį¹Ä« ca gaį¹Äcariyo ca ƱÄto yasassÄ« titthakaro sÄdhusammato bahujanassa. āThis PÅ«raį¹a Kassapa leads an order and a community, and tutors a community. Heās a well-known and famous religious founder, deemed holy by many people.

kataį¹ upapattÄ«su byÄkaroti: When a disciple passes away, he declares that

Api ca kho naį¹ evaį¹ byÄkaroti: Rather, he declares that they have
āacchecchi taį¹haį¹, vivattayi saį¹yojanaį¹, sammÄ mÄnÄbhisamayÄ antamakÄsi dukkhassÄāti. cut off craving, untied the fetters, and by rightly comprehending conceit have made an end of suffering.ā
Tassa mayhaį¹, bho gotama, ahu deva kaį¹
khÄ, ahu vicikicchÄ: I had doubt and uncertainty about that:
ākathaį¹ nÄma samaį¹assa gotamassa dhammo abhiƱƱeyyoāāti? āHow on earth can I understand the ascetic Gotamaās teaching?āā
āAlaƱhi te, vaccha, kaį¹
khituį¹, alaį¹ vicikicchituį¹. āVaccha, no wonder youāre doubting and uncertain.
Kaį¹
khanÄ«ye ca pana te į¹hÄne vicikicchÄ uppannÄ. Doubt has come up in you about an uncertain matter.
SaupÄdÄnassa khvÄhaį¹, vaccha, upapattiį¹ paƱƱÄpemi no anupÄdÄnassa. I describe rebirth for someone who has fuel for grasping, not for someone who does not.
SeyyathÄpi, vaccha, aggi saupÄdÄno jalati, no anupÄdÄno; Itās like a fire which only burns with fuel, not without fuel.
evameva khvÄhaį¹, vaccha, saupÄdÄnassa upapattiį¹ paƱƱÄpemi, no anupÄdÄnassÄāti. In the same way I describe rebirth for someone who grasps fuel, not for someone who doesnāt grasp fuel.ā
āYasmiį¹, bho gotama, samaye acci vÄtena khittÄ dÅ«rampi gacchati, imassa pana bhavaį¹ gotamo kiį¹ upÄdÄnasmiį¹ paƱƱÄpetÄ«āti? āBut when a flame is blown away by the wind, what does the worthy Gotama say is its fuel then?ā
āYasmiį¹ kho, vaccha, samaye acci vÄtena khittÄ dÅ«rampi gacchati, tamahaį¹ vÄtÅ«pÄdÄnaį¹ paƱƱÄpemi. āAt such a time, I say that itās fueled by the wind.
VÄto hissa, vaccha, tasmiį¹ samaye upÄdÄnaį¹ hotÄ«āti. For the wind is its fuel then.ā
āYasmiƱca pana, bho gotama, samaye imaƱca kÄyaį¹ nikkhipati, satto ca aƱƱataraį¹ kÄyaį¹ anupapanno hoti, imassa pana bhavaį¹ gotamo kiį¹ upÄdÄnasmiį¹ paƱƱÄpetÄ«āti? āBut when someone who is attached has laid down this body and has not been reborn in one of the realms, what does the worthy Gotama say is their fuel then?ā
āYasmiį¹ kho, vaccha, samaye imaƱca kÄyaį¹ nikkhipati, satto ca aƱƱataraį¹ kÄyaį¹ anupapanno hoti, tamahaį¹ taį¹hÅ«pÄdÄnaį¹ vadÄmi. āWhen someone who is attached has laid down this body, Vaccha, and has not been reborn in one of the realms, I say theyāre fueled by craving.
Taį¹hÄ hissa, vaccha, tasmiį¹ samaye upÄdÄnaį¹ hotÄ«āti. For craving is their fuel then.ā
