Sāriputtasutta Sāriputta

Sāvatthinidānaį¹. At SāvatthÄ«.

Atha kho āyasmā sāriputto yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaį¹ abhivādetvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho āyasmā sāriputto bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then Sāriputta went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:

ā€œsakalamidaį¹, bhante, brahmacariyaį¹, yadidaį¹ā€”kalyāį¹‡amittatā kalyāį¹‡asahāyatā kalyāį¹‡asampavaį¹…katāā€ti. ā€œSir, good friends, companions, and associates are the whole of the spiritual life.ā€

ā€œSādhu sādhu, sāriputta. ā€œGood, good, Sāriputta!

Sakalamidaį¹, sāriputta, brahmacariyaį¹, yadidaį¹ā€”kalyāį¹‡amittatā kalyāį¹‡asahāyatā kalyāį¹‡asampavaį¹…katā. Good friends, companions, and associates are the whole of the spiritual life.

Kalyāį¹‡amittassetaį¹, sāriputta, bhikkhuno pāį¹ikaį¹…khaį¹ kalyāį¹‡asahāyassa kalyāį¹‡asampavaį¹…kassaā€”ariyaį¹ aį¹į¹haį¹…gikaį¹ maggaį¹ bhāvessati, ariyaį¹ aį¹į¹haį¹…gikaį¹ maggaį¹ bahulÄ«karissati. A mendicant with good friends, companions, and associates can expect to develop and cultivate the noble eightfold path.

KathaƱca, sāriputta, bhikkhu kalyāį¹‡amitto kalyāį¹‡asahāyo kalyāį¹‡asampavaį¹…ko ariyaį¹ aį¹į¹haį¹…gikaį¹ maggaį¹ bhāveti, ariyaį¹ aį¹į¹haį¹…gikaį¹ maggaį¹ bahulÄ«karoti? And how does a mendicant with good friends develop and cultivate the noble eightfold path?

Idha, sāriputta, bhikkhu sammādiį¹į¹hiį¹ bhāveti vivekanissitaį¹ virāganissitaį¹ nirodhanissitaį¹ vossaggapariį¹‡Ämiį¹ ā€¦peā€¦ sammāsamādhiį¹ bhāveti vivekanissitaį¹ virāganissitaį¹ nirodhanissitaį¹ vossaggapariį¹‡Ämiį¹. Itā€™s when a mendicant develops right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion, which rely on seclusion, fading away, and cessation, and ripen as letting go.

Evaį¹ kho, sāriputta, bhikkhu kalyāį¹‡amitto kalyāį¹‡asahāyo kalyāį¹‡asampavaį¹…ko ariyaį¹ aį¹į¹haį¹…gikaį¹ maggaį¹ bhāveti, ariyaį¹ aį¹į¹haį¹…gikaį¹ maggaį¹ bahulÄ«karoti. Thatā€™s how a mendicant with good friends develops and cultivates the noble eightfold path.

Tadamināpetaį¹, sāriputta, pariyāyena veditabbaį¹ yathā sakalamidaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹, yadidaį¹ā€”kalyāį¹‡amittatā kalyāį¹‡asahāyatā kalyāį¹‡asampavaį¹…katā. And hereā€™s another way to understand how good friends are the whole of the spiritual life.

MamaƱhi, sāriputta, kalyāį¹‡amittaį¹ āgamma jātidhammā sattā jātiyā parimuccanti; jarādhammā sattā jarāya parimuccanti; maraį¹‡adhammā sattā maraį¹‡ena parimuccanti; sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsadhammā sattā sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsehi parimuccanti. For, by relying on me as a good friend, sentient beings who are liable to rebirth, old age, and death, to sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress are freed from all these things.

Iminā kho etaį¹, sāriputta, pariyāyena veditabbaį¹ yathā sakalamidaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹, yadidaį¹ā€”kalyāį¹‡amittatā kalyāį¹‡asahāyatā kalyāį¹‡asampavaį¹…katāā€ti. This is another way to understand how good friends are the whole of the spiritual life.ā€
