Atha kho sambahulÄ bhikkhÅ« yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kamiį¹su ā¦peā¦ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«diį¹su. Ekamantaį¹ nisinnÄ kho te bhikkhÅ« bhagavantaį¹ etadavocuį¹: Then several mendicants went up to the Buddha ā¦ and said to him:
āIdha no, bhante, aƱƱatitthiyÄ paribbÄjakÄ amhe evaį¹ pucchanti: āSir, sometimes wanderers of other religions ask us:
ākimatthiyaį¹, Ävuso, samaį¹e gotame brahmacariyaį¹ vussatÄ«āti? āReverends, whatās the purpose of leading the spiritual life under the ascetic Gotama?ā
Evaį¹ puį¹į¹hÄ mayaį¹, bhante, tesaį¹ aƱƱatitthiyÄnaį¹ paribbÄjakÄnaį¹ evaį¹ byÄkaroma: We answer them like this:
ādukkhassa kho, Ävuso, pariƱƱatthaį¹ bhagavati brahmacariyaį¹ vussatÄ«āti. āThe purpose of leading the spiritual life under the Buddha is to completely understand suffering.ā
Kacci mayaį¹, bhante, evaį¹ puį¹į¹hÄ evaį¹ byÄkaramÄnÄ vuttavÄdino ceva bhagavato homa, na ca bhagavantaį¹ abhÅ«tena abbhÄcikkhÄma, dhammassa cÄnudhammaį¹ byÄkaroma, na ca koci sahadhammiko vÄdÄnuvÄdo gÄrayhaį¹ į¹hÄnaį¹ ÄgacchatÄ«āti? Answering this way, we trust that we repeat what the Buddha has said, and donāt misrepresent him with an untruth. We trust our explanation is in line with the teaching, and that there are no legitimate grounds for rebuttal or criticism.ā
āTaggha tumhe, bhikkhave, evaį¹ puį¹į¹hÄ evaį¹ byÄkaramÄnÄ vuttavÄdino ceva me hotha, na ca maį¹ abhÅ«tena abbhÄcikkhatha, dhammassa cÄnudhammaį¹ byÄkarotha, na ca koci sahadhammiko vÄdÄnuvÄdo gÄrayhaį¹ į¹hÄnaį¹ Ägacchati. āIndeed, in answering this way you repeat what Iāve said, and donāt misrepresent me with an untruth. Your explanation is in line with the teaching, and there are no legitimate grounds for rebuttal or criticism.
Dukkhassa hi pariƱƱatthaį¹ mayi brahmacariyaį¹ vussati. For the purpose of leading the spiritual life under me is to completely understand suffering.
Sace vo, bhikkhave, aƱƱatitthiyÄ paribbÄjakÄ evaį¹ puccheyyuį¹: If wanderers of other religions were to ask you:
āatthi panÄvuso, maggo, atthi paį¹ipadÄ etassa dukkhassa pariƱƱÄyÄāti, evaį¹ puį¹į¹hÄ tumhe, bhikkhave, tesaį¹ aƱƱatitthiyÄnaį¹ paribbÄjakÄnaį¹ evaį¹ byÄkareyyÄtha: āIs there a path and a practice for completely understanding that suffering?ā You should answer them like this:
āatthi kho, Ävuso, maggo, atthi paį¹ipadÄ etassa dukkhassa pariƱƱÄyÄāti. āThere is.ā
Katamo ca, bhikkhave, maggo, katamÄ paį¹ipadÄ etassa dukkhassa pariƱƱÄyÄti? And what is that path?
Ayameva ariyo aį¹į¹haį¹
giko maggo, seyyathidaį¹āIt is simply this noble eightfold path, that is:
sammÄdiį¹į¹hi ā¦peā¦ sammÄsamÄdhi. right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion.
Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, maggo, ayaį¹ paį¹ipadÄ etassa dukkhassa pariƱƱÄyÄti. This is the path and the practice for completely understanding suffering.
Evaį¹ puį¹į¹hÄ tumhe, bhikkhave, tesaį¹ aƱƱatitthiyÄnaį¹ paribbÄjakÄnaį¹ evaį¹ byÄkareyyÄthÄāti. When questioned by wanderers of other religions, thatās how you should answer them.ā
