Kimatthiyasutta Whatā€™s the Purpose

Sāvatthinidānaį¹. At SāvatthÄ«.

Atha kho sambahulā bhikkhÅ« yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kamiį¹su ā€¦peā€¦ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«diį¹su. Ekamantaį¹ nisinnā kho te bhikkhÅ« bhagavantaį¹ etadavocuį¹: Then several mendicants went up to the Buddha ā€¦ and said to him:

ā€œIdha no, bhante, aƱƱatitthiyā paribbājakā amhe evaį¹ pucchanti: ā€œSir, sometimes wanderers of other religions ask us:

ā€˜kimatthiyaį¹, āvuso, samaį¹‡e gotame brahmacariyaį¹ vussatÄ«ā€™ti? ā€˜Reverends, whatā€™s the purpose of leading the spiritual life under the ascetic Gotama?ā€™

Evaį¹ puį¹­į¹­hā mayaį¹, bhante, tesaį¹ aƱƱatitthiyānaį¹ paribbājakānaį¹ evaį¹ byākaroma: We answer them like this:

ā€˜dukkhassa kho, āvuso, pariƱƱatthaį¹ bhagavati brahmacariyaį¹ vussatÄ«ā€™ti. ā€˜The purpose of leading the spiritual life under the Buddha is to completely understand suffering.ā€™

Kacci mayaį¹, bhante, evaį¹ puį¹­į¹­hā evaį¹ byākaramānā vuttavādino ceva bhagavato homa, na ca bhagavantaį¹ abhÅ«tena abbhācikkhāma, dhammassa cānudhammaį¹ byākaroma, na ca koci sahadhammiko vādānuvādo gārayhaį¹ į¹­hānaį¹ āgacchatÄ«ā€ti? Answering this way, we trust that we repeat what the Buddha has said, and donā€™t misrepresent him with an untruth. We trust our explanation is in line with the teaching, and that there are no legitimate grounds for rebuttal or criticism.ā€

ā€œTaggha tumhe, bhikkhave, evaį¹ puį¹­į¹­hā evaį¹ byākaramānā vuttavādino ceva me hotha, na ca maį¹ abhÅ«tena abbhācikkhatha, dhammassa cānudhammaį¹ byākarotha, na ca koci sahadhammiko vādānuvādo gārayhaį¹ į¹­hānaį¹ āgacchati. ā€œIndeed, in answering this way you repeat what Iā€™ve said, and donā€™t misrepresent me with an untruth. Your explanation is in line with the teaching, and there are no legitimate grounds for rebuttal or criticism.

Dukkhassa hi pariƱƱatthaį¹ mayi brahmacariyaį¹ vussati. For the purpose of leading the spiritual life under me is to completely understand suffering.

Sace vo, bhikkhave, aƱƱatitthiyā paribbājakā evaį¹ puccheyyuį¹: If wanderers of other religions were to ask you:

ā€˜atthi panāvuso, maggo, atthi paį¹­ipadā etassa dukkhassa pariƱƱāyāā€™ti, evaį¹ puį¹­į¹­hā tumhe, bhikkhave, tesaį¹ aƱƱatitthiyānaį¹ paribbājakānaį¹ evaį¹ byākareyyātha: ā€˜Is there a path and a practice for completely understanding that suffering?ā€™ You should answer them like this:

ā€˜atthi kho, āvuso, maggo, atthi paį¹­ipadā etassa dukkhassa pariƱƱāyāā€™ti. ā€˜There is.ā€™

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, maggo, katamā paį¹­ipadā etassa dukkhassa pariƱƱāyāti? And what is that path?

Ayameva ariyo aį¹­į¹­haį¹…giko maggo, seyyathidaį¹ā€”It is simply this noble eightfold path, that is:

sammādiį¹­į¹­hi ā€¦peā€¦ sammāsamādhi. right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion.

Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, maggo, ayaį¹ paį¹­ipadā etassa dukkhassa pariƱƱāyāti. This is the path and the practice for completely understanding suffering.

Evaį¹ puį¹­į¹­hā tumhe, bhikkhave, tesaį¹ aƱƱatitthiyānaį¹ paribbājakānaį¹ evaį¹ byākareyyāthāā€ti. When questioned by wanderers of other religions, thatā€™s how you should answer them.ā€
