Paį¹­hamaaƱƱatarabhikkhusutta A Mendicant (1st)

Sāvatthinidānaį¹. At SāvatthÄ«.

Atha kho aƱƱataro bhikkhu yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami ā€¦peā€¦ ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then a mendicant went up to the Buddha ā€¦ and asked him,

ā€œā€˜brahmacariyaį¹, brahmacariyanā€™ti, bhante, vuccati. ā€œSir, they speak of this thing called the ā€˜spiritual pathā€™.

Katamaį¹ nu kho, bhante, brahmacariyaį¹, katamaį¹ brahmacariyapariyosānanā€ti? What is the spiritual path? And what is the culmination of the spiritual path?ā€

ā€œAyameva kho, bhikkhu, ariyo aį¹­į¹­haį¹…giko maggo brahmacariyaį¹, seyyathidaį¹ā€”ā€œMendicant, the spiritual path is simply this noble eightfold path, that is:

sammādiį¹­į¹­hi ā€¦peā€¦ sammāsamādhi. right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion.

Yo kho, bhikkhu, rāgakkhayo dosakkhayo mohakkhayoā€”The ending of greed, hate, and delusion.

idaį¹ brahmacariyapariyosānanā€ti. This is the culmination of the spiritual path.ā€
