Atha kho āyasmā uttiyo yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami ā€¦peā€¦ ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho āyasmā uttiyo bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then Venerable Uttiya went up to the Buddha ā€¦ and asked him,

ā€œidha mayhaį¹, bhante, rahogatassa paį¹­isallÄ«nassa evaį¹ cetaso parivitakko udapādi: ā€œJust now, sir, as I was in private retreat this thought came to mind.

ā€˜paƱca kāmaguį¹‡Ä vuttā bhagavatā. ā€˜The Buddha has spoken of the five kinds of sensual stimulation.

Katame nu kho paƱca kāmaguį¹‡Ä vuttā bhagavatāā€™ā€ti? What are they?ā€™ā€

ā€œSādhu sādhu, uttiya. ā€œGood, good, Uttiya!

PaƱcime kho, uttiya, kāmaguį¹‡Ä vuttā mayā. I have spoken of these five kinds of sensual stimulation.

Katame paƱca? What five?

CakkhuviƱƱeyyā rÅ«pā iį¹­į¹­hā kantā manāpā piyarÅ«pā kāmÅ«pasaį¹hitā rajanÄ«yā, Sights known by the eye, which are likable, desirable, agreeable, pleasant, sensual, and arousing.

sotaviƱƱeyyā saddā ā€¦peā€¦ Sounds known by the ear ā€¦

ghānaviƱƱeyyā gandhā ā€¦peā€¦ Smells known by the nose ā€¦

jivhāviƱƱeyyā rasā ā€¦peā€¦ Tastes known by the tongue ā€¦

kāyaviƱƱeyyā phoį¹­į¹­habbā iį¹­į¹­hā kantā manāpā piyarÅ«pā kāmÅ«pasaį¹hitā rajanÄ«yāā€”Touches known by the body, which are likable, desirable, agreeable, pleasant, sensual, and arousing.

ime kho, uttiya, paƱca kāmaguį¹‡Ä vuttā mayā. These are the five kinds of sensual stimulation that Iā€™ve spoken of.

Imesaį¹ kho, uttiya, paƱcannaį¹ kāmaguį¹‡Änaį¹ pahānāya ariyo aį¹­į¹­haį¹…giko maggo bhāvetabbo. The noble eightfold path should be developed to give up these five kinds of sensual stimulation.

Katamo ariyo aį¹­į¹­haį¹…giko maggo? What is the noble eightfold path?

Seyyathidaį¹ā€”sammādiį¹­į¹­hi ā€¦peā€¦ sammāsamādhi. It is right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion.

Imesaį¹ kho, uttiya, paƱcannaį¹ kāmaguį¹‡Änaį¹ pahānāya ayaį¹ ariyo aį¹­į¹­haį¹…giko maggo bhāvetabboā€ti. This is the noble eightfold path that should be developed to give up these five kinds of sensual stimulation.ā€

Tassuddānaį¹

Micchattaį¹ akusalaį¹ dhammaį¹,

Duve paį¹­ipadāpi ca;

Asappurisena dve kumbho,

Samādhi vedanuttiyenāti.
