Paį¹­hamasāmaƱƱasutta The Ascetic Life (1st)

Sāvatthinidānaį¹. At SāvatthÄ«.

ā€œSāmaƱƱaƱca vo, bhikkhave, desessāmi, sāmaƱƱaphalāni ca. ā€œMendicants, I will teach you the ascetic life and the fruits of the ascetic life.

Taį¹ suį¹‡Ätha. Listen ā€¦

KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, sāmaƱƱaį¹? And what is the ascetic life?

Ayameva ariyo aį¹­į¹­haį¹…giko maggo, seyyathidaį¹ā€”It is simply this noble eightfold path, that is:

sammādiį¹­į¹­hi ā€¦peā€¦ sammāsamādhi. right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion.

Idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, sāmaƱƱaį¹. This is called the ascetic life.

Katamāni ca, bhikkhave, sāmaƱƱaphalāni? And what are the fruits of the ascetic life?

Sotāpattiphalaį¹, sakadāgāmiphalaį¹, anāgāmiphalaį¹, arahattaphalaį¹ā€”The fruits of stream-entry, once-return, non-return, and perfection.

imāni vuccanti, bhikkhave, sāmaƱƱaphalānÄ«ā€ti. These are called the fruits of the ascetic life.ā€
