āSace vo, bhikkhave, aƱƱatitthiyÄ paribbÄjakÄ evaį¹ puccheyyuį¹: āMendicants, if wanderers who follow another religion were to ask you:
ākimatthiyaį¹, Ävuso, samaį¹e gotame brahmacariyaį¹ vussatÄ«āti, evaį¹ puį¹į¹hÄ tumhe, bhikkhave, tesaį¹ aƱƱatitthiyÄnaį¹ paribbÄjakÄnaį¹ evaį¹ byÄkareyyÄtha: āReverends, whatās the purpose of leading the spiritual life under the ascetic Gotama?ā You should answer them like this:
ārÄgavirÄgatthaį¹ kho, Ävuso, bhagavati brahmacariyaį¹ vussatÄ«āti. āThe purpose of leading the spiritual life under the Buddha is the fading away of greed.ā
Sace pana vo, bhikkhave, aƱƱatitthiyÄ paribbÄjakÄ evaį¹ puccheyyuį¹: If wanderers of other religions were to ask you:
āatthi panÄvuso, maggo, atthi paį¹ipadÄ rÄgavirÄgÄyÄāti, evaį¹ puį¹į¹hÄ tumhe, bhikkhave, tesaį¹ aƱƱatitthiyÄnaį¹ paribbÄjakÄnaį¹ evaį¹ byÄkareyyÄtha: āIs there a path and a practice for the fading away of greed?ā You should answer them like this:
āatthi kho, Ävuso, maggo, atthi paį¹ipadÄ rÄgavirÄgÄyÄāti. āThere is a path and a practice for the fading away of greed.ā
Katamo ca, bhikkhave, maggo, katamÄ ca paį¹ipadÄ rÄgavirÄgÄya? And what is that path, what is that practice for the fading away of greed?
Ayameva ariyo aį¹į¹haį¹
giko maggo, seyyathidaį¹āIt is simply this noble eightfold path, that is:
sammÄdiį¹į¹hi ā¦peā¦ sammÄsamÄdhi. right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion.
Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, maggo, ayaį¹ paį¹ipadÄ rÄgavirÄgÄyÄti. This is the path, this is the practice for the fading away of greed.
Evaį¹ puį¹į¹hÄ tumhe, bhikkhave, tesaį¹ aƱƱatitthiyÄnaį¹ paribbÄjakÄnaį¹ evaį¹ byÄkareyyÄthÄāti. When questioned by wanderers of other religions, thatās how you should answer them.ā
