Anupādāparinibbānasutta Extinguishment by Not Grasping

ā€œSace vo, bhikkhave, aƱƱatitthiyā paribbājakā evaį¹ puccheyyuį¹: ā€œMendicants, if wanderers who follow another religion were to ask you:

ā€˜kimatthiyaį¹, āvuso, samaį¹‡e gotame brahmacariyaį¹ vussatÄ«ā€™ti, evaį¹ puį¹­į¹­hā tumhe, bhikkhave, tesaį¹ aƱƱatitthiyānaį¹ paribbājakānaį¹ evaį¹ byākareyyātha: ā€˜Reverends, whatā€™s the purpose of leading the spiritual life under the ascetic Gotama?ā€™ You should answer them like this:

ā€˜anupādāparinibbānatthaį¹ kho, āvuso, bhagavati brahmacariyaį¹ vussatÄ«ā€™ti. ā€˜The purpose of leading the spiritual life under the Buddha is extinguishment by not grasping.ā€™

Sace pana vo, bhikkhave, aƱƱatitthiyā paribbājakā evaį¹ puccheyyuį¹: If wanderers of other religions were to ask you:

ā€˜atthi panāvuso, maggo, atthi paį¹­ipadā anupādāparinibbānāyāā€™ti, evaį¹ puį¹­į¹­hā tumhe, bhikkhave, tesaį¹ aƱƱatitthiyānaį¹ paribbājakānaį¹ evaį¹ byākareyyātha: ā€˜Is there a path and a practice for extinguishment by not grasping?ā€™ You should answer them like this:

ā€˜atthi kho, āvuso, maggo, atthi paį¹­ipadā anupādāparinibbānāyāā€™ti. ā€˜There is a path and a practice for extinguishment by not grasping.ā€™

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, maggo, katamā ca paį¹­ipadā anupādāparinibbānāya? And what is that path, what is that practice for extinguishment by not grasping?

Ayameva ariyo aį¹­į¹­haį¹…giko maggo, seyyathidaį¹ā€”It is simply this noble eightfold path, that is:

sammādiį¹­į¹­hi ā€¦peā€¦ sammāsamādhi. right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion.

Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, maggo, ayaį¹ paį¹­ipadā anupādāparinibbānāyāti. This is the path, this is the practice for extinguishment by not grasping.

Evaį¹ puį¹­į¹­hā tumhe, bhikkhave, tesaį¹ aƱƱatitthiyānaį¹ paribbājakānaį¹ evaį¹ byākareyyāthāā€ti. When questioned by wanderers of other religions, thatā€™s how you should answer them.ā€

Tassuddānaį¹

Virāgasaį¹yojanaį¹ anusayaį¹,

Addhānaį¹ āsavā khayā;

VijjāvimuttiƱāį¹‡aƱca,

Anupādāya aį¹­į¹­hamÄ«.
