ā€œSeyyathāpi, bhikkhave, rukkho pācÄ«naninno pācÄ«napoį¹‡o pācÄ«napabbhāro. ā€œMendicants, suppose a tree slants, slopes, and inclines to the east.

So mÅ«lacchinno katamena papateyyāā€ti? If it was cut off at the root, where would it fall?ā€

ā€œYena, bhante, ninno yena poį¹‡o yena pabbhāroā€ti. ā€œSir, it would fall in the direction that it slants, slopes, and inclines.ā€

ā€œEvameva kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu ariyaį¹ aį¹­į¹­haį¹…gikaį¹ maggaį¹ bhāvento ariyaį¹ aį¹­į¹­haį¹…gikaį¹ maggaį¹ bahulÄ«karonto nibbānaninno hoti nibbānapoį¹‡o nibbānapabbhāro. ā€œIn the same way, a mendicant who develops and cultivates the noble eightfold path slants, slopes, and inclines to extinguishment.

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sammādiį¹­į¹­hiį¹ bhāveti vivekanissitaį¹ virāganissitaį¹ nirodhanissitaį¹ vossaggapariį¹‡Ämiį¹ ā€¦peā€¦ sammāsamādhiį¹ bhāveti vivekanissitaį¹ virāganissitaį¹ nirodhanissitaį¹ vossaggapariį¹‡Ämiį¹ ā€¦ Itā€™s when a mendicant develops right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion, which rely on seclusion, fading away, and cessation, and ripen as letting go.
