SÅ«kasutta A Spike

ā€œSeyyathāpi, bhikkhave, sālisÅ«kaį¹ vā yavasÅ«kaį¹ vā sammāpaį¹‡ihitaį¹ hatthena vā pādena vā akkantaį¹ hatthaį¹ vā pādaį¹ vā bhindissati lohitaį¹ vā uppādessatÄ«tiā€”į¹hānametaį¹ vijjati. ā€œMendicants, suppose a spike of rice or barley was pointing the right way. If you trod on it with hand or foot, itā€™s possible it may break the skin and produce blood.

Taį¹ kissa hetu? Why is that?

Sammāpaį¹‡ihitattā, bhikkhave, sÅ«kassa. Because the spike is pointing the right way.

Evameva kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sammāpaį¹‡ihitāya diį¹į¹hiyā sammāpaį¹‡ihitāya maggabhāvanāya avijjaį¹ bhindissati, vijjaį¹ uppādessati, nibbānaį¹ sacchikarissatÄ«tiā€”į¹hānametaį¹ vijjati. In the same way, a mendicant whose view and development of the path is pointing the right way may well break ignorance, produce knowledge, and realize extinguishment.

Taį¹ kissa hetu? Why is that?

Sammāpaį¹‡ihitattā, bhikkhave, diį¹į¹hiyā. Because their view is pointing the right way.

KathaƱca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sammāpaį¹‡ihitāya diį¹į¹hiyā sammāpaį¹‡ihitāya maggabhāvanāya avijjaį¹ bhindati, vijjaį¹ uppādeti, nibbānaį¹ sacchikaroti? And how does a mendicant whose view and development of the path is pointing the right way break ignorance, give rise to knowledge, and realize extinguishment?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sammādiį¹į¹hiį¹ bhāveti vivekanissitaį¹ ā€¦peā€¦ sammāsamādhiį¹ bhāveti vivekanissitaį¹ virāganissitaį¹ nirodhanissitaį¹ vossaggapariį¹‡Ämiį¹ ā€¦ Itā€™s when a mendicant develops right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion, which rely on seclusion, fading away, and cessation, and ripen as letting go.

evaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sammāpaį¹‡ihitāya diį¹į¹hiyā sammāpaį¹‡ihitāya maggabhāvanāya avijjaį¹ bhindati, vijjaį¹ uppādeti, nibbānaį¹ sacchikarotÄ«ā€ti. Thatā€™s how a mendicant whose view and development of the path is pointing the right way breaks ignorance, gives rise to knowledge, and realizes extinguishment.ā€
