Taį¹‡hāsutta Craving

ā€œTisso imā, bhikkhave, taį¹‡hā. ā€œMendicants, there are these three cravings.

Katamā tisso? What three?

Kāmataį¹‡hā, bhavataį¹‡hā, vibhavataį¹‡hāā€”Craving for sensual pleasures, craving to continue existence, and craving to end existence.

imā kho, bhikkhave, tisso taį¹‡hā. These are the three cravings.

Imāsaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, tissannaį¹ taį¹‡hānaį¹ abhiƱƱāya pariƱƱāya parikkhayāya pahānāya ā€¦peā€¦ ayaį¹ ariyo aį¹­į¹­haį¹…giko maggo bhāvetabbo. The noble eightfold path should be developed for the direct knowledge, complete understanding, finishing, and giving up of these three cravings.

Itā€™s when a mendicant develops right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion, which rely on seclusion, fading away, and cessation, and ripen as letting go.

Imāsaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, tissannaį¹ taį¹‡hānaį¹ abhiƱƱāya pariƱƱāya parikkhayāya pahānāya ā€¦peā€¦ ayaį¹ ariyo aį¹­į¹­haį¹…giko maggo bhāvetabboā€ti. This is the noble eightfold path that should be developed for the direct knowledge, complete understanding, finishing, and giving up of these three cravings.ā€

Tasināsutta Thirst

Katamā tisso? What three?

Kāmatasinā, bhavatasinā, vibhavatasinā. Thirst for sensual pleasures, thirst to continue existence, and thirst to end existence.

Imāsaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, tissannaį¹ tasinānaį¹ abhiƱƱāya pariƱƱāya parikkhayāya pahānāya ā€¦peā€¦. For the direct knowledge, complete understanding, finishing, and giving up of these three thirsts ā€¦

rāgavinayapariyosānaį¹ dosavinayapariyosānaį¹ mohavinayapariyosānaį¹ ā€¦peā€¦ ā€¦ which culminates in the removal of greed, hate, and delusion.

amatogadhaį¹ amataparāyanaį¹ amatapariyosānaį¹ ā€¦peā€¦ ā€¦ which culminates, finishes, and ends in freedom from death.

nibbānaninnaį¹ nibbānapoį¹‡aį¹ nibbānapabbhāraį¹. ā€¦ which slants, slopes, and inclines to extinguishment.
