ā€œPaƱcimāni, bhikkhave, nÄ«varaį¹‡Äni. ā€œMendicants, there are these five hindrances.

Katamāni paƱca? What five?

KāmacchandanÄ«varaį¹‡aį¹, byāpādanÄ«varaį¹‡aį¹, thinamiddhanÄ«varaį¹‡aį¹, uddhaccakukkuccanÄ«varaį¹‡aį¹, vicikicchānÄ«varaį¹‡aį¹ā€”The hindrances of sensual desire, ill will, dullness and drowsiness, restlessness and remorse, and doubt.

imāni kho, bhikkhave, paƱca nÄ«varaį¹‡Äni. These are the five hindrances.

Imesaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, paƱcannaį¹ nÄ«varaį¹‡Änaį¹ abhiƱƱāya pariƱƱāya parikkhayāya pahānāya ā€¦peā€¦ ayaį¹ ariyo aį¹­į¹­haį¹…giko maggo bhāvetabboā€ti. The noble eightfold path should be developed for the direct knowledge, complete understanding, finishing, and giving up of these five hindrances.ā€
