Uddhambhāgiyasutta Higher Fetters

ā€œPaƱcimāni, bhikkhave, uddhambhāgiyāni saį¹yojanāni. ā€œMendicants, there are five higher fetters.

Katamāni paƱca? What five?

RÅ«parāgo, arÅ«parāgo, māno, uddhaccaį¹, avijjāā€”Desire for rebirth in the realm of luminous form, desire for rebirth in the formless realm, conceit, restlessness, and ignorance.

imāni kho, bhikkhave, paƱcuddhambhāgiyāni saį¹yojanāni. These are the five higher fetters.

Imesaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, paƱcannaį¹ uddhambhāgiyānaį¹ saį¹yojanānaį¹ abhiƱƱāya pariƱƱāya parikkhayāya pahānāya ariyo aį¹­į¹­haį¹…giko maggo bhāvetabbo. The noble eightfold path should be developed for the direct knowledge, complete understanding, finishing, and giving up of these five higher fetters.

Itā€™s when a mendicant develops right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion, which rely on seclusion, fading away, and cessation, and ripen as letting go.

Imesaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, paƱcannaį¹ uddhambhāgiyānaį¹ saį¹yojanānaį¹ abhiƱƱāya pariƱƱāya parikkhayāya pahānāya ayaį¹ ariyo aį¹­į¹­haį¹…giko maggo bhāvetabboti. This is the noble eightfold path that should be developed for the direct knowledge, complete understanding, finishing, and giving up of these five higher fetters.ā€

Ogho yogo upādānaį¹,

ganthaį¹ anusayena ca;

Avijjāvaggo paį¹­hamo,

dutiyaį¹ vihāraį¹ vuccati;

Micchattaį¹ tatiyo vaggo,

catutthaį¹ paį¹­ipanneneva.

Titthiyaį¹ paƱcamo vaggo,

chaį¹­į¹­ho sÅ«riyena ca;

Bahukate sattamo vaggo,

uppādo aį¹­į¹­hamena ca.

Divasavaggo navamo,

Dasamo appamādena ca;

Ekādasabalavaggo,

Dvādasa esanā pāįø·iyaį¹;

Oghavaggo bhavati terasāti.
