Bhikkhusutta A Monk

Sāvatthinidānaį¹. At SāvatthÄ«.

Atha kho aƱƱataro bhikkhu yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami ā€¦peā€¦ ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then a mendicant went up to the Buddha ā€¦ and asked him,

ā€œā€˜bojjhaį¹…gā, bojjhaį¹…gāā€™ti, bhante, vuccanti. ā€œSir, they speak of the ā€˜awakening factorsā€™.

Kittāvatā nu kho, bhante, ā€˜bojjhaį¹…gāā€™ti vuccantÄ«ā€ti? How are the awakening factors defined?ā€

ā€œBodhāya saį¹vattantÄ«ti kho, bhikkhu, tasmā ā€˜bojjhaį¹…gāā€™ti vuccanti. ā€œMendicant, theyā€™re called awakening factors because they lead to awakening.

Idha, bhikkhu, satisambojjhaį¹…gaį¹ bhāveti vivekanissitaį¹ virāganissitaį¹ nirodhanissitaį¹ vossaggapariį¹‡Ämiį¹ ā€¦peā€¦ A mendicant develops the awakening factors of mindfulness, investigation of principles, energy, rapture, tranquility, immersion,

upekkhāsambojjhaį¹…gaį¹ bhāveti vivekanissitaį¹ virāganissitaį¹ nirodhanissitaį¹ vossaggapariį¹‡Ämiį¹. and equanimity, which rely on seclusion, fading away, and cessation, and ripen as letting go.

Tassime satta bojjhaį¹…ge bhāvayato kāmāsavāpi cittaį¹ vimuccati, bhavāsavāpi cittaį¹ vimuccati, avijjāsavāpi cittaį¹ vimuccati. As they develop the seven awakening factors, their mind is freed from the defilements of sensuality, desire to be reborn, and ignorance.

Vimuttasmiį¹ vimuttamiti Ʊāį¹‡aį¹ hoti. When theyā€™re freed, they know theyā€™re freed.

ā€˜KhÄ«į¹‡Ä jāti, vusitaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹, kataį¹ karaį¹‡Ä«yaį¹, nāparaį¹ itthattāyāā€™ti pajānāti. They understand: ā€˜Rebirth is ended, the spiritual journey has been completed, what had to be done has been done, there is nothing further for this place.ā€™

Bodhāya saį¹vattantÄ«ti, bhikkhu, tasmā ā€˜bojjhaį¹…gāā€™ti vuccantÄ«ā€ti. Theyā€™re called awakening factors because they lead to awakening.ā€
