Ekadhammasutta One Thing

ā€œNāhaį¹, bhikkhave, aƱƱaį¹ ekadhammampi samanupassāmi, yo evaį¹ bhāvito bahulÄ«kato saį¹yojanÄ«yānaį¹ dhammānaį¹ pahānāya saį¹vattati, yathayidaį¹, bhikkhave, satta bojjhaį¹…gā. ā€œMendicants, I do not see a single thing that, when it is developed and cultivated like this, leads to giving up the things that are prone to being fettered like the seven awakening factors.

Katame satta? What seven?

Satisambojjhaį¹…go ā€¦peā€¦ upekkhāsambojjhaį¹…go. The awakening factors of mindfulness, investigation of principles, energy, rapture, tranquility, immersion, and equanimity.

Kathaį¹ bhāvitā ca, bhikkhave, satta bojjhaį¹…gā kathaį¹ bahulÄ«katā saį¹yojanÄ«yānaį¹ dhammānaį¹ pahānāya saį¹vattanti? And how are the seven awakening factors developed and cultivated so as to lead to giving up the things that are prone to being fettered?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu satisambojjhaį¹…gaį¹ bhāveti vivekanissitaį¹ ā€¦peā€¦ Itā€™s when a mendicant develops the awakening factors of mindfulness, investigation of principles, energy, rapture, tranquility, immersion,

upekkhāsambojjhaį¹…gaį¹ bhāveti vivekanissitaį¹ virāganissitaį¹ nirodhanissitaį¹ vossaggapariį¹‡Ämiį¹. and equanimity, which rely on seclusion, fading away, and cessation, and ripen as letting go.

Evaį¹ bhāvitā kho, bhikkhave, satta bojjhaį¹…gā evaį¹ bahulÄ«katā saį¹yojanÄ«yānaį¹ dhammānaį¹ pahānāya saį¹vattanti. Thatā€™s how the seven awakening factors are developed and cultivated so as to lead to giving up the things that are prone to being fettered.

Katame ca, bhikkhave, saį¹yojanÄ«yā dhammā? And what are the things that are prone to being fettered?

Cakkhu, bhikkhave, saį¹yojanÄ«yo dhammo. The eye is something thatā€™s prone to being fettered.

Etthete uppajjanti saį¹yojanavinibandhā ajjhosānā ā€¦peā€¦ This is where these fetters, shackles, and attachments arise.

jivhā saį¹yojanÄ«yā dhammā. The ear ā€¦ nose ā€¦ tongue ā€¦ body ā€¦

Etthete uppajjanti saį¹yojanavinibandhā ajjhosānā ā€¦peā€¦

mano saį¹yojanÄ«yo dhammo. mind is something thatā€™s prone to being fettered.

Etthete uppajjanti saį¹yojanavinibandhā ajjhosānā. This is where these fetters, shackles, and attachments arise.

Ime vuccanti, bhikkhave, saį¹yojanÄ«yā dhammāā€ti. These are called the things that are prone to being fettered.ā€
