Uddhambhāgiyasutta Higher Fetters

Sāvatthinidānaį¹. At SāvatthÄ«.

ā€œPaƱcimāni, bhikkhave, uddhambhāgiyāni saį¹yojanāni. ā€œMendicants, there are five higher fetters.

Katamāni paƱca? What five?

RÅ«parāgo, arÅ«parāgo, māno, uddhaccaį¹, avijjāā€”Desire for rebirth in the realm of luminous form, desire for rebirth in the formless realm, conceit, restlessness, and ignorance.

imāni kho, bhikkhave, paƱcuddhambhāgiyāni saį¹yojanāni. These are the five higher fetters.

Imesaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, paƱcannaį¹ uddhambhāgiyānaį¹ saį¹yojanānaį¹ abhiƱƱāya pariƱƱāya parikkhayāya pahānāya satta bojjhaį¹…gā bhāvetabbā. The seven awakening factors should be developed for the direct knowledge, complete understanding, finishing, and giving up of these five higher fetters.

Katame satta? What seven?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu satisambojjhaį¹…gaį¹ bhāveti vivekanissitaį¹ virāganissitaį¹ nirodhanissitaį¹ vossaggapariį¹‡Ämiį¹ ā€¦peā€¦ Itā€™s when a mendicant develops the awakening factors of mindfulness, investigation of principles, energy, rapture, tranquility, immersion,

upekkhāsambojjhaį¹…gaį¹ bhāveti rāgavinayapariyosānaį¹ dosavinayapariyosānaį¹ mohavinayapariyosānaį¹ ā€¦ and equanimity, which culminate in the removal of greed, hate, and delusion. ā€¦ā€

amatogadhaį¹ amataparāyanaį¹ amatapariyosānaį¹ ā€¦ ā€œā€¦ which culminate, finish, and end in freedom from death ā€¦ā€

nibbānaninnaį¹ nibbānapoį¹‡aį¹ nibbānapabbhāraį¹. ā€œā€¦ which slant, slope, and incline to extinguishment ā€¦

Imesaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu paƱcannaį¹ uddhambhāgiyānaį¹ saį¹yojanānaį¹ abhiƱƱāya pariƱƱāya parikkhayāya pahānāya ime satta bojjhaį¹…gā bhāvetabbāā€ti. The seven awakening factors should be developed for the direct knowledge, complete understanding, finishing, and giving up of these five higher fetters.ā€
