Sālasutta At Sālā

Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavā kosalesu viharati sālāya brāhmaį¹‡agāme. At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Kosalans near the brahmin village of Sālā.

Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhÅ« āmantesi ā€¦peā€¦ etadavoca: There the Buddha addressed the mendicants:

ā€œYe te, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ« navā acirapabbajitā adhunāgatā imaį¹ dhammavinayaį¹, te vo, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ« catunnaį¹ satipaį¹­į¹­hānānaį¹ bhāvanāya samādapetabbā nivesetabbā patiį¹­į¹­hāpetabbā. ā€œMendicants, those mendicants who are juniorā€”recently gone forth, newly come to this teaching and trainingā€”should be encouraged, supported, and established in the four kinds of mindfulness meditation.

vedanāsu vedanānupassino viharatha ātāpino sampajānā ekodibhÅ«tā vippasannacittā samāhitā ekaggacittā, vedanānaį¹ yathābhÅ«taį¹ Ʊāį¹‡Äya; Meditate observing an aspect of feelingsā€”keen, aware, at one, with minds that are clear, immersed in samādhi, and unified, so as to truly know feelings.

citte cittānupassino viharatha ātāpino sampajānā ekodibhÅ«tā vippasannacittā samāhitā ekaggacittā, cittassa yathābhÅ«taį¹ Ʊāį¹‡Äya; Meditate observing an aspect of the mindā€”keen, aware, at one, with minds that are clear, immersed in samādhi, and unified, so as to truly know the mind.

dhammesu dhammānupassino viharatha ātāpino sampajānā ekodibhÅ«tā vippasannacittā samāhitā ekaggacittā, dhammānaį¹ yathābhÅ«taį¹ Ʊāį¹‡Äya. Meditate observing an aspect of principlesā€”keen, aware, at one, with minds that are clear, immersed in samādhi, and unified, so as to truly know principles.

Yepi te, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ« sekhā appattamānasā anuttaraį¹ yogakkhemaį¹ patthayamānā viharanti, tepi kāye kāyānupassino viharanti ātāpino sampajānā ekodibhÅ«tā vippasannacittā samāhitā ekaggacittā, kāyassa pariƱƱāya; Those mendicants who are traineesā€”who havenā€™t achieved their heartā€™s desire, but live aspiring to the supreme sanctuary from the yokeā€”also meditate observing an aspect of the bodyā€”keen, aware, at one, with minds that are clear, immersed in samādhi, and unified, so as to fully understand the body.

Yepi te, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ« arahanto khÄ«į¹‡Äsavā vusitavanto katakaraį¹‡Ä«yā ohitabhārā anuppattasadatthā parikkhÄ«į¹‡abhavasaį¹yojanā sammadaƱƱāvimuttā, tepi kāye kāyānupassino viharanti ātāpino sampajānā ekodibhÅ«tā vippasannacittā samāhitā ekaggacittā, kāyena visaį¹yuttā; Those mendicants who are perfectedā€”who have ended the defilements, completed the spiritual journey, done what had to be done, laid down the burden, achieved their own goal, utterly ended the fetter of continued existence, and are rightly freed through enlightenmentā€”also meditate observing an aspect of the bodyā€”keen, aware, at one, with minds that are clear, immersed in samādhi, and unified, detached from the body.

vedanāsu vedanānupassino viharanti ātāpino sampajānā ekodibhÅ«tā vippasannacittā samāhitā ekaggacittā, vedanāhi visaį¹yuttā; They meditate observing an aspect of feelingsā€”keen, aware, at one, with minds that are clear, immersed in samādhi, and unified, detached from feelings.
