MahÄpurisasutta A Great Man

Atha kho ÄyasmÄ sÄriputto yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho ÄyasmÄ sÄriputto bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then SÄriputta went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to the Buddha:
āāmahÄpuriso, mahÄpurisoāti, bhante, vuccati. āSir, they speak of āa great manā.
KittÄvatÄ nu kho, bhante, mahÄpuriso hotÄ«āti? How is a great man defined?ā
āVimuttacittattÄ khvÄhaį¹, sÄriputta, āmahÄpurisoāti vadÄmi. āSÄriputta, someone whose mind is free is a great man, I say.
AvimuttacittattÄ āno mahÄpurisoāti vadÄmi. If their mind is not free, I say theyāre not a great man.
KathaƱca, sÄriputta, vimuttacitto hoti? And how does someone have a free mind?
Idha, sÄriputta, bhikkhu kÄye kÄyÄnupassÄ« viharati ÄtÄpÄ« sampajÄno satimÄ, vineyya loke abhijjhÄdomanassaį¹. Itās when a mendicant meditates by observing an aspect of the bodyākeen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.
Tassa kÄye kÄyÄnupassino viharato cittaį¹ virajjati, vimuccati anupÄdÄya Äsavehi. As they meditate observing an aspect of the body, their mind becomes dispassionate, and is freed from the defilements by not grasping.

Tassa dhammesu dhammÄnupassino viharato cittaį¹ virajjati, vimuccati anupÄdÄya Äsavehi. As they meditate observing an aspect of principles, their mind becomes dispassionate, and is freed from the defilements by not grasping.
Evaį¹ kho, sÄriputta, vimuttacitto hoti. Thatās how someone has a free mind.
VimuttacittattÄ khvÄhaį¹, sÄriputta, āmahÄpurisoāti vadÄmi. Someone whose mind is free is a great man, I say.
AvimuttacittattÄ āno mahÄpurisoāti vadÄmÄ«āti. If their mind is not free, I say theyāre not a great man.ā
