Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ vajjÄ«su viharati ukkacelÄyaį¹ gaį¹
gÄya nadiyÄ tÄ«re mahatÄ bhikkhusaį¹
ghena saddhiį¹ aciraparinibbutesu sÄriputtamoggallÄnesu. At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Vajjis near UkkacelÄ on the bank of the Ganges river, together with a large Saį¹
gha of mendicants. It was not long after SÄriputta and MoggallÄna had become fully quenched.
Tena kho pana samayena bhagavÄ bhikkhusaį¹
ghaparivuto ajjhokÄse nisinno hoti. Now, at that time the Buddha was sitting in the open, surrounded by the Saį¹
gha of mendicants.
Atha kho bhagavÄ tuį¹hÄ«bhÅ«taį¹ bhikkhusaį¹
ghaį¹ anuviloketvÄ bhikkhÅ« Ämantesi: Then the Buddha looked around the Saį¹
gha of mendicants, who were silent. He addressed them:
āapi myÄyaį¹, bhikkhave, parisÄ suĆ±Ć±Ä viya khÄyati parinibbutesu sÄriputtamoggallÄnesu. āMendicants, this assembly seems empty to me now that SÄriputta and MoggallÄna have become fully quenched.
AsuĆ±Ć±Ä me, bhikkhave, parisÄ hoti, anapekkhÄ tassaį¹ disÄyaį¹ hoti, yassaį¹ disÄyaį¹ sÄriputtamoggallÄnÄ viharanti. When SÄriputta and MoggallÄna were alive, my assembly was never empty; I had no concern for any region where they stayed.
Ye hi te, bhikkhave, ahesuį¹ atÄ«tamaddhÄnaį¹ arahanto sammÄsambuddhÄ, tesampi bhagavantÄnaį¹ etapparamaį¹yeva sÄvakayugaį¹ ahosiāThe Buddhas of the past or the future have pairs of chief disciples who are no better than
seyyathÄpi mayhaį¹ sÄriputtamoggallÄnÄ. SÄriputta and MoggallÄna were to me.
Yepi te, bhikkhave, bhavissanti anÄgatamaddhÄnaį¹ arahanto sammÄsambuddhÄ, tesampi bhagavantÄnaį¹ etapparamaį¹yeva sÄvakayugaį¹ bhavissatiāseyyathÄpi mayhaį¹ sÄriputtamoggallÄnÄ.
Acchariyaį¹, bhikkhave, sÄvakÄnaį¹, abbhutaį¹, bhikkhave, sÄvakÄnaį¹. Itās an incredible and amazing quality of such disciples
Satthu ca nÄma sÄsanakarÄ bhavissanti ovÄdappaį¹ikarÄ, catunnaƱca parisÄnaį¹ piyÄ bhavissanti manÄpÄ garubhÄvanÄ«yÄ ca. that they fulfill the Teacherās instructions and follow his advice. And theyāre liked and approved, respected and admired by the four assemblies.
Acchariyaį¹, bhikkhave, tathÄgatassa, abbhutaį¹, bhikkhave, tathÄgatassa. And itās an incredible and amazing quality of the Realized One
EvarÅ«pepi nÄma sÄvakayuge parinibbute natthi tathÄgatassa soko vÄ paridevo vÄ. that when such a pair of disciples becomes fully quenched he does not sorrow or lament.
Taį¹ kutettha, bhikkhave, labbhÄ. Yaį¹ taį¹ jÄtaį¹ bhÅ«taį¹ saį¹
khataį¹ palokadhammaį¹, taį¹ vata mÄ palujjÄ«tiāHow could it possibly be so that what is born, created, conditioned, and liable to wear out should not wear out?

SeyyathÄpi, bhikkhave, mahato rukkhassa tiį¹į¹hato sÄravato ye mahantatarÄ khandhÄ te palujjeyyuį¹; Suppose there was a large tree standing with heartwood, and the largest branches fell off.
evameva kho, bhikkhave, mahato bhikkhusaį¹
ghassa tiį¹į¹hato sÄravato sÄriputtamoggallÄnÄ parinibbutÄ. In the same way, in the great Saį¹
gha that stands with heartwood, SÄriputta and MoggallÄna have become fully quenched.
Taį¹ kutettha, bhikkhave, labbhÄ. Yaį¹ taį¹ jÄtaį¹ bhÅ«taį¹ saį¹
khataį¹ palokadhammaį¹, taį¹ vata mÄ palujjÄ«tiāHow could it possibly be so that what is born, created, conditioned, and liable to wear out should not wear out?

TasmÄtiha, bhikkhave, attadÄ«pÄ viharatha attasaraį¹Ä anaƱƱasaraį¹Ä, dhammadÄ«pÄ dhammasaraį¹Ä anaƱƱasaraį¹Ä. So mendicants, live as your own island, your own refuge, with no other refuge. Let the teaching be your island and your refuge, with no other refuge.
KathaƱca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu attadÄ«po viharati attasaraį¹o anaƱƱasaraį¹o, dhammadÄ«po dhammasaraį¹o anaƱƱasaraį¹o? And how does a mendicant do this?
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kÄye kÄyÄnupassÄ« viharati ÄtÄpÄ« sampajÄno satimÄ, vineyya loke abhijjhÄdomanassaį¹; Itās when a mendicant meditates by observing an aspect of the bodyākeen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.

Evaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu attadÄ«po viharati attasaraį¹o anaƱƱasaraį¹o, dhammadÄ«po dhammasaraį¹o anaƱƱasaraį¹o. Thatās how a mendicant lives as their own island, their own refuge, with no other refuge. Thatās how the teaching is their island and their refuge, with no other refuge.
Ye hi keci, bhikkhave, etarahi vÄ mamaccaye vÄ attadÄ«pÄ viharissanti attasaraį¹Ä anaƱƱasaraį¹Ä, dhammadÄ«pÄ dhammasaraį¹Ä anaƱƱasaraį¹Ä; tamatagge mete, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ« bhavissanti ye keci sikkhÄkÄmÄāti. Whether now or after I have passed, any who shall live as their own island, their own refuge, with no other refuge; with the teaching as their island and their refuge, with no other refugeāthose mendicants of mine who want to train shall be among the best of the best.ā
