Ukkacelasutta At Ukkacelā

Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavā vajjÄ«su viharati ukkacelāyaį¹ gaį¹…gāya nadiyā tÄ«re mahatā bhikkhusaį¹…ghena saddhiį¹ aciraparinibbutesu sāriputtamoggallānesu. At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Vajjis near Ukkacelā on the bank of the Ganges river, together with a large Saį¹…gha of mendicants. It was not long after Sāriputta and Moggallāna had become fully quenched.

Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā bhikkhusaį¹…ghaparivuto ajjhokāse nisinno hoti. Now, at that time the Buddha was sitting in the open, surrounded by the Saį¹…gha of mendicants.

Atha kho bhagavā tuį¹‡hÄ«bhÅ«taį¹ bhikkhusaį¹…ghaį¹ anuviloketvā bhikkhÅ« āmantesi: Then the Buddha looked around the Saį¹…gha of mendicants, who were silent. He addressed them:

ā€œapi myāyaį¹, bhikkhave, parisā suƱƱā viya khāyati parinibbutesu sāriputtamoggallānesu. ā€œMendicants, this assembly seems empty to me now that Sāriputta and Moggallāna have become fully quenched.

AsuƱƱā me, bhikkhave, parisā hoti, anapekkhā tassaį¹ disāyaį¹ hoti, yassaį¹ disāyaį¹ sāriputtamoggallānā viharanti. When Sāriputta and Moggallāna were alive, my assembly was never empty; I had no concern for any region where they stayed.

Ye hi te, bhikkhave, ahesuį¹ atÄ«tamaddhānaį¹ arahanto sammāsambuddhā, tesampi bhagavantānaį¹ etapparamaį¹yeva sāvakayugaį¹ ahosiā€”The Buddhas of the past or the future have pairs of chief disciples who are no better than

seyyathāpi mayhaį¹ sāriputtamoggallānā. Sāriputta and Moggallāna were to me.

Yepi te, bhikkhave, bhavissanti anāgatamaddhānaį¹ arahanto sammāsambuddhā, tesampi bhagavantānaį¹ etapparamaį¹yeva sāvakayugaį¹ bhavissatiā€”seyyathāpi mayhaį¹ sāriputtamoggallānā.

Acchariyaį¹, bhikkhave, sāvakānaį¹, abbhutaį¹, bhikkhave, sāvakānaį¹. Itā€™s an incredible and amazing quality of such disciples

Satthu ca nāma sāsanakarā bhavissanti ovādappaį¹­ikarā, catunnaƱca parisānaį¹ piyā bhavissanti manāpā garubhāvanÄ«yā ca. that they fulfill the Teacherā€™s instructions and follow his advice. And theyā€™re liked and approved, respected and admired by the four assemblies.

Acchariyaį¹, bhikkhave, tathāgatassa, abbhutaį¹, bhikkhave, tathāgatassa. And itā€™s an incredible and amazing quality of the Realized One

Evarūpepi nāma sāvakayuge parinibbute natthi tathāgatassa soko vā paridevo vā. that when such a pair of disciples becomes fully quenched he does not sorrow or lament.

Taį¹ kutettha, bhikkhave, labbhā. Yaį¹ taį¹ jātaį¹ bhÅ«taį¹ saį¹…khataį¹ palokadhammaį¹, taį¹ vata mā palujjÄ«tiā€”How could it possibly be so that what is born, created, conditioned, and liable to wear out should not wear out?

netaį¹ į¹­hānaį¹ vijjati. That is not possible.

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, mahato rukkhassa tiį¹­į¹­hato sāravato ye mahantatarā khandhā te palujjeyyuį¹; Suppose there was a large tree standing with heartwood, and the largest branches fell off.

evameva kho, bhikkhave, mahato bhikkhusaį¹…ghassa tiį¹­į¹­hato sāravato sāriputtamoggallānā parinibbutā. In the same way, in the great Saį¹…gha that stands with heartwood, Sāriputta and Moggallāna have become fully quenched.

Taį¹ kutettha, bhikkhave, labbhā. Yaį¹ taį¹ jātaį¹ bhÅ«taį¹ saį¹…khataį¹ palokadhammaį¹, taį¹ vata mā palujjÄ«tiā€”How could it possibly be so that what is born, created, conditioned, and liable to wear out should not wear out?

netaį¹ į¹­hānaį¹ vijjati. That is not possible.

Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, attadÄ«pā viharatha attasaraį¹‡Ä anaƱƱasaraį¹‡Ä, dhammadÄ«pā dhammasaraį¹‡Ä anaƱƱasaraį¹‡Ä. So mendicants, live as your own island, your own refuge, with no other refuge. Let the teaching be your island and your refuge, with no other refuge.

KathaƱca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu attadÄ«po viharati attasaraį¹‡o anaƱƱasaraį¹‡o, dhammadÄ«po dhammasaraį¹‡o anaƱƱasaraį¹‡o? And how does a mendicant do this?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kāye kāyānupassÄ« viharati ātāpÄ« sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaį¹; Itā€™s when a mendicant meditates by observing an aspect of the bodyā€”keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.

vedanāsu ā€¦peā€¦ They meditate observing an aspect of feelings ā€¦

citte ā€¦peā€¦ mind ā€¦

dhammesu dhammānupassÄ« viharati ātāpÄ« sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaį¹. principlesā€”keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.

Evaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu attadÄ«po viharati attasaraį¹‡o anaƱƱasaraį¹‡o, dhammadÄ«po dhammasaraį¹‡o anaƱƱasaraį¹‡o. Thatā€™s how a mendicant lives as their own island, their own refuge, with no other refuge. Thatā€™s how the teaching is their island and their refuge, with no other refuge.

Ye hi keci, bhikkhave, etarahi vā mamaccaye vā attadÄ«pā viharissanti attasaraį¹‡Ä anaƱƱasaraį¹‡Ä, dhammadÄ«pā dhammasaraį¹‡Ä anaƱƱasaraį¹‡Ä; tamatagge mete, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ« bhavissanti ye keci sikkhākāmāā€ti. Whether now or after I have passed, any who shall live as their own island, their own refuge, with no other refuge; with the teaching as their island and their refuge, with no other refugeā€”those mendicants of mine who want to train shall be among the best of the best.ā€
