Bāhiyasutta With Bāhiya

Sāvatthinidānaį¹. At SāvatthÄ«.

Atha kho āyasmā bāhiyo yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaį¹ abhivādetvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho āyasmā bāhiyo bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then Venerable Bāhiya went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:

ā€œsādhu me, bhante, bhagavā saį¹…khittena dhammaį¹ desetu, yamahaį¹ bhagavato dhammaį¹ sutvā eko vÅ«pakaį¹į¹ho appamatto ātāpÄ« pahitatto vihareyyanā€ti. ā€œSir, may the Buddha please teach me Dhamma in brief. When Iā€™ve heard it, Iā€™ll live alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute.ā€

ā€œTasmātiha tvaį¹, bāhiya, ādimeva visodhehi kusalesu dhammesu. ā€œWell then, Bāhiya, you should purify the starting point of skillful qualities.

Ko cādi kusalānaį¹ dhammānaį¹? What is the starting point of skillful qualities?

SÄ«laƱca suvisuddhaį¹, diį¹į¹hi ca ujukā. Well purified ethics and correct view.

Yato ca kho te, bāhiya, sÄ«laƱca suvisuddhaį¹ bhavissati, diį¹į¹hi ca ujukā, tato tvaį¹, bāhiya, sÄ«laį¹ nissāya sÄ«le patiį¹į¹hāya cattāro satipaį¹į¹hāne bhāveyyāsi. When your ethics are well purified and your view is correct, you should develop the four kinds of mindfulness meditation, depending on and grounded on ethics.

Katame cattāro? What four?

Idha tvaį¹, bāhiya, kāye kāyānupassÄ« viharāhi ātāpÄ« sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaį¹; Meditate observing an aspect of the bodyā€”keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.

vedanāsu ā€¦peā€¦ Meditate observing an aspect of feelings ā€¦

citte ā€¦peā€¦ mind ā€¦

dhammesu dhammānupassÄ« viharāhi ātāpÄ« sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaį¹. principlesā€”keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.

Yato kho tvaį¹, bāhiya, sÄ«laį¹ nissāya sÄ«le patiį¹į¹hāya ime cattāro satipaį¹į¹hāne evaį¹ bhāvessasi, tato tuyhaį¹, bāhiya, yā ratti vā divaso vā āgamissati, vuddhiyeva pāį¹ikaį¹…khā kusalesu dhammesu, no parihānÄ«ā€ti. When you develop these four kinds of mindfulness meditation, depending on and grounded on ethics, you can expect growth, not decline, in skillful qualities, whether by day or by night.ā€

Atha kho āyasmā bāhiyo bhagavato bhāsitaį¹ abhinanditvā anumoditvā uį¹į¹hāyāsanā bhagavantaį¹ abhivādetvā padakkhiį¹‡aį¹ katvā pakkāmi. And then Venerable Bāhiya approved and agreed with what the Buddha said. He got up from his seat, bowed, and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on his right, before leaving.

Atha kho āyasmā bāhiyo eko vÅ«pakaį¹į¹ho appamatto ātāpÄ« pahitatto viharanto nacirassevaā€”yassatthāya kulaputtā sammadeva agārasmā anagāriyaį¹ pabbajanti, tadanuttaraį¹ā€”brahmacariyapariyosānaį¹ diį¹į¹heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiƱƱā sacchikatvā upasampajja vihāsi. Then Bāhiya, living alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute, soon realized the supreme end of the spiritual path in this very life. He lived having achieved with his own insight the goal for which gentlemen rightly go forth from the lay life to homelessness.

ā€œKhÄ«į¹‡Ä jāti, vusitaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹, kataį¹ karaį¹‡Ä«yaį¹, nāparaį¹ itthattāyāā€ti abbhaƱƱāsi. He understood: ā€œRebirth is ended; the spiritual journey has been completed; what had to be done has been done; there is nothing further for this place.ā€

AƱƱataro ca panāyasmā bāhiyo arahataį¹ ahosÄ«ti. And Venerable Bāhiya became one of the perfected.

PaƱcamaį¹.
