SÄ«lasutta Ethics

Evaį¹ me sutaį¹ā€”So I have heard.

ekaį¹ samayaį¹ āyasmā ca ānando āyasmā ca bhaddo pāį¹­aliputte viharanti kukkuį¹­Ärāme. At one time the venerables Ānanda and Bhadda were staying near Pāį¹­aliputta, in the Chicken Monastery.

Atha kho āyasmā bhaddo sāyanhasamayaį¹ paį¹­isallānā vuį¹­į¹­hito yenāyasmā ānando tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā āyasmatā ānandena saddhiį¹ sammodi. Then in the late afternoon, Venerable Bhadda came out of retreat, went to Venerable Ānanda, and exchanged greetings with him.

SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sāraį¹‡Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisāretvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho āyasmā bhaddo āyasmantaį¹ ānandaį¹ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to Ānanda:

ā€œyānimāni, āvuso ānanda, kusalāni sÄ«lāni vuttāni bhagavatā, imāni kusalāni sÄ«lāni kimatthiyāni vuttāni bhagavatāā€ti? ā€œReverend Ānanda, the Buddha has spoken of skillful ethics. Whatā€™s their purpose?ā€

ā€œSādhu sādhu, āvuso bhadda. ā€œGood, good, Reverend Bhadda!

Bhaddako kho te, āvuso bhadda, ummaį¹…go, bhaddakaį¹ paį¹­ibhānaį¹, kalyāį¹‡Ä« paripucchā. Your approach and articulation are excellent, and itā€™s a good question.

EvaƱhi tvaį¹, āvuso bhadda, pucchasi: For you asked:

ā€œYānimāni, āvuso bhadda, kusalāni sÄ«lāni vuttāni bhagavatā, imāni kusalāni sÄ«lāni yāvadeva catunnaį¹ satipaį¹­į¹­hānānaį¹ bhāvanāya vuttāni bhagavatā. ā€œThe Buddha has spoken of skillful ethics to the extent necessary for developing the four kinds of mindfulness meditation.

Katamesaį¹ catunnaį¹? What four?

Idhāvuso, bhikkhu kāye kāyānupassÄ« viharati ātāpÄ« sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaį¹; Itā€™s when a mendicant meditates by observing an aspect of the bodyā€”keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.
