Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ ÄyasmÄ ca Änando ÄyasmÄ ca bhaddo pÄį¹aliputte viharanti kukkuį¹ÄrÄme. At one time the venerables Änanda and Bhadda were staying near PÄį¹aliputta, in the Chicken Monastery.
Atha kho ÄyasmÄ bhaddo sÄyanhasamayaį¹ paį¹isallÄnÄ vuį¹į¹hito yenÄyasmÄ Änando tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ ÄyasmatÄ Änandena saddhiį¹ sammodi. Then in the late afternoon, Venerable Bhadda came out of retreat, went to Venerable Änanda, and exchanged greetings with him.
SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sÄraį¹Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisÄretvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho ÄyasmÄ bhaddo Äyasmantaį¹ Änandaį¹ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to Änanda:
āko nu kho, Ävuso Änanda, hetu, ko paccayo yena saddhammaparihÄnaį¹ hoti? āWhatās the cause, Reverend Änanda, whatās the reason why the true teaching declines?
