Parihānasutta Decline

Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ āyasmā ca ānando āyasmā ca bhaddo pāį¹­aliputte viharanti kukkuį¹­Ärāme. At one time the venerables Ānanda and Bhadda were staying near Pāį¹­aliputta, in the Chicken Monastery.

Atha kho āyasmā bhaddo sāyanhasamayaį¹ paį¹­isallānā vuį¹­į¹­hito yenāyasmā ānando tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā āyasmatā ānandena saddhiį¹ sammodi. Then in the late afternoon, Venerable Bhadda came out of retreat, went to Venerable Ānanda, and exchanged greetings with him.

SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sāraį¹‡Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisāretvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho āyasmā bhaddo āyasmantaį¹ ānandaį¹ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to Ānanda:

ā€œko nu kho, āvuso ānanda, hetu, ko paccayo yena saddhammaparihānaį¹ hoti? ā€œWhatā€™s the cause, Reverend Ānanda, whatā€™s the reason why the true teaching declines?

Ko nu kho, āvuso ānanda, hetu, ko paccayo yena saddhammaaparihānaį¹ hotÄ«ā€ti? And whatā€™s the cause, whatā€™s the reason why the true teaching doesnā€™t decline?ā€

ā€œSādhu sādhu, āvuso bhadda. ā€œGood, good, Reverend Bhadda!

Bhaddako kho te, āvuso bhadda, ummaį¹…go, bhaddakaį¹ paį¹­ibhānaį¹, kalyāį¹‡Ä« paripucchā. Your approach and articulation are excellent, and itā€™s a good question.

ā€œCatunnaį¹ kho, āvuso, satipaį¹­į¹­hānānaį¹ abhāvitattā abahulÄ«katattā saddhammaparihānaį¹ hoti. ā€œItā€™s because of not developing and cultivating the four kinds of mindfulness meditation that the true teaching declines.

CatunnaƱca kho, āvuso, satipaį¹­į¹­hānānaį¹ bhāvitattā bahulÄ«katattā saddhammaaparihānaį¹ hoti. Itā€™s because of developing and cultivating the four kinds of mindfulness meditation that the true teaching doesnā€™t decline.

Katamesaį¹ catunnaį¹? What four?

Idhāvuso, bhikkhu kāye kāyānupassÄ« viharati ātāpÄ« sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaį¹; Itā€™s when a mendicant meditates by observing an aspect of the bodyā€”keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.
