Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ āyasmā ca sāriputto āyasmā ca mahāmoggallāno āyasmā ca anuruddho sākete viharanti kaį¹‡įøakÄ«vane. At one time the venerables Sāriputta, Mahāmoggallāna, and Anuruddha were staying near Sāketa, in the Thorny Wood.

Atha kho āyasmā ca sāriputto āyasmā ca mahāmoggallāno sāyanhasamayaį¹ paį¹­isallānā vuį¹­į¹­hitā yenāyasmā anuruddho tenupasaį¹…kamiį¹su; upasaį¹…kamitvā āyasmatā anuruddhena saddhiį¹ sammodiį¹su. Then in the late afternoon, Sāriputta and Mahāmoggallāna came out of retreat, went to Anuruddha, and exchanged greetings with him.

SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sāraį¹‡Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisāretvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«diį¹su. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho āyasmā sāriputto āyasmantaį¹ anuruddhaį¹ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, they sat down to one side. Sāriputta said to Anuruddha:

ā€œā€˜sekho, sekhoā€™ti, āvuso anuruddha, vuccati. ā€œReverend, they speak of this person called ā€˜a traineeā€™.

Kittāvatā nu kho, āvuso, sekho hotÄ«ā€ti? How is a trainee defined?ā€

ā€œCatunnaį¹ kho, āvuso, satipaį¹­į¹­hānānaį¹ padesaį¹ bhāvitattā sekho hoti. ā€œReverends, a trainee is someone who has partly developed the four kinds of mindfulness meditation.

Katamesaį¹ catunnaį¹? What four?

Idhāvuso, bhikkhu kāye kāyānupassÄ« viharati ātāpÄ« sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaį¹; Itā€™s when a mendicant meditates by observing an aspect of the bodyā€”keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.
