Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho āyasmā sāriputto āyasmantaį¹ anuruddhaį¹ etadavoca:

ā€œkatamesaį¹, āvuso anuruddha, dhammānaį¹ bhāvitattā bahulÄ«katattā mahābhiƱƱataį¹ pattoā€ti? ā€œReverend Anuruddha, what things have you developed and cultivated to attain great direct knowledge?ā€

ā€œCatunnaį¹, āvuso, satipaį¹­į¹­hānānaį¹ bhāvitattā bahulÄ«katattā mahābhiƱƱataį¹ patto. ā€œReverend, I attained great direct knowledge by developing and cultivating the four kinds of mindfulness meditation.

Katamesaį¹ catunnaį¹? What four?

Idhāhaį¹, āvuso, kāye kāyānupassÄ« viharāmi ātāpÄ« sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaį¹; Itā€™s when I meditate observing an aspect of the bodyā€”keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.

dhammesu dhammānupassÄ« viharāmi ātāpÄ« sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaį¹. principlesā€”keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.

Imesaį¹ khvāhaį¹, āvuso, catunnaį¹ satipaį¹­į¹­hānānaį¹ bhāvitattā bahulÄ«katattā mahābhiƱƱataį¹ patto. I attained great direct knowledge by developing and cultivating these four kinds of mindfulness meditation.

ImesaƱca panāhaį¹, āvuso, catunnaį¹ satipaį¹­į¹­hānānaį¹ bhāvitattā bahulÄ«katattā sahassaį¹ lokaį¹ abhijānāmÄ«ā€ti. And itā€™s because of developing and cultivating these four kinds of mindfulness meditation that I directly know the thousandfold galaxy.ā€
