Āsavasutta Defilements

ā€œTayome, bhikkhave āsavā. ā€œMendicants, there are these three defilements.

Katame tayo? What three?

Kāmāsavo, bhavāsavo, avijjāsavoā€”The defilements of sensuality, desire to be reborn, and ignorance.

ime kho, bhikkhave, tayo āsavā. These are the three defilements.

Imesaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, tiį¹‡į¹‡annaį¹ āsavānaį¹ pahānāya cattāro satipaį¹­į¹­hānā bhāvetabbā. The four kinds of mindfulness meditation should be developed to give up these three defilements.

Katame cattāro? What four?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kāye kāyānupassÄ« viharati ātāpÄ« sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaį¹; Itā€™s when a mendicant meditates by observing an aspect of the bodyā€”keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.
