Paį¹­hamavibhaį¹…gasutta Analysis (1st)

ā€œPaƱcimāni, bhikkhave, indriyāni. ā€œMendicants, there are these five faculties.

Katamāni paƱca? What five?

Saddhindriyaį¹ ā€¦peā€¦ paƱƱindriyaį¹. The faculties of faith, energy, mindfulness, immersion, and wisdom.

KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, saddhindriyaį¹? And what is the faculty of faith?

Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako saddho hoti, saddahati tathāgatassa bodhiį¹: Itā€™s when a noble disciple has faith in the Realized Oneā€™s awakening:

ā€˜itipi so bhagavā arahaį¹ sammāsambuddho vijjācaraį¹‡asampanno sugato lokavidÅ« anuttaro purisadammasārathi satthā devamanussānaį¹ buddho bhagavāā€™tiā€”ā€˜That Blessed One is perfected, a fully awakened Buddha, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, holy, knower of the world, supreme guide for those who wish to train, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, blessed.ā€™

idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, saddhindriyaį¹. This is called the faculty of faith.

KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, vÄ«riyindriyaį¹? And what is the faculty of energy?

Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako āraddhavÄ«riyo viharati akusalānaį¹ dhammānaį¹ pahānāya, kusalānaį¹ dhammānaį¹ upasampadāya, thāmavā daįø·haparakkamo anikkhittadhuro kusalesu dhammesuā€”Itā€™s when a noble disciple lives with energy roused up for giving up unskillful qualities and embracing skillful qualities. Theyā€™re strong, staunchly vigorous, not slacking off when it comes to developing skillful qualities.

idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, vÄ«riyindriyaį¹. This is called the faculty of energy.

KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, satindriyaį¹? And what is the faculty of mindfulness?

Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako satimā hoti paramena satinepakkena samannāgato cirakatampi cirabhāsitampi saritā anussaritāā€”Itā€™s when a noble disciple is mindful. They have utmost mindfulness and alertness, and can remember and recall what was said and done long ago.

idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, satindriyaį¹. This is called the faculty of mindfulness.

KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, samādhindriyaį¹? And what is the faculty of immersion?

Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako vossaggārammaį¹‡aį¹ karitvā labhati samādhiį¹, labhati cittassa ekaggataį¹ā€”Itā€™s when a noble disciple, relying on letting go, gains immersion, gains unification of mind.

idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, samādhindriyaį¹. This is called the faculty of immersion.

KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, paƱƱindriyaį¹? And what is the faculty of wisdom?

Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako paƱƱavā hoti udayatthagāminiyā paƱƱāya samannāgato ariyāya nibbedhikāya, sammā dukkhakkhayagāminiyāā€”Itā€™s when a noble disciple is wise. They have the wisdom of arising and passing away which is noble, penetrative, and leads to the complete ending of suffering.

idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, paƱƱindriyaį¹. This is called the faculty of wisdom.

Imāni kho, bhikkhave, paƱcindriyānÄ«ā€ti. These are the five faculties.ā€
