Dutiyavibhaį¹…gasutta Analysis (2nd)

ā€œPaƱcimāni, bhikkhave, indriyāni. ā€œMendicants, there are these five faculties.

Katamāni paƱca? What five?

Saddhindriyaį¹ ā€¦peā€¦ paƱƱindriyaį¹. The faculties of faith, energy, mindfulness, immersion, and wisdom.

KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, saddhindriyaį¹? And what is the faculty of faith?

Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako saddho hoti, saddahati tathāgatassa bodhiį¹: Itā€™s when a noble disciple has faith in the Realized Oneā€™s awakening:

ā€˜itipi so bhagavā arahaį¹ sammāsambuddho vijjācaraį¹‡asampanno sugato lokavidÅ« anuttaro purisadammasārathi satthā devamanussānaį¹ buddho bhagavāā€™tiā€”ā€˜That Blessed One is perfected, a fully awakened Buddha, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, holy, knower of the world, supreme guide for those who wish to train, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, blessed.ā€™

idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, saddhindriyaį¹. This is called the faculty of faith.

KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, vÄ«riyindriyaį¹? And what is the faculty of energy?

Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako āraddhavÄ«riyo viharati akusalānaį¹ dhammānaį¹ pahānāya, kusalānaį¹ dhammānaį¹ upasampadāya, thāmavā daįø·haparakkamo anikkhittadhuro kusalesu dhammesu. Itā€™s when a noble disciple lives with energy roused up for giving up unskillful qualities and embracing skillful qualities. Theyā€™re strong, staunchly vigorous, not slacking off when it comes to developing skillful qualities.

So anuppannānaį¹ pāpakānaį¹ akusalānaį¹ dhammānaį¹ anuppādāya chandaį¹ janeti vāyamati vÄ«riyaį¹ ārabhati cittaį¹ paggaį¹‡hāti padahati; They generate enthusiasm, try, make an effort, exert the mind, and strive so that bad, unskillful qualities donā€™t arise.

uppannānaį¹ pāpakānaį¹ akusalānaį¹ dhammānaį¹ pahānāya chandaį¹ janeti vāyamati vÄ«riyaį¹ ārabhati cittaį¹ paggaį¹‡hāti padahati; They generate enthusiasm, try, make an effort, exert the mind, and strive so that bad, unskillful qualities that have arisen are given up.

anuppannānaį¹ kusalānaį¹ dhammānaį¹ uppādāya chandaį¹ janeti vāyamati vÄ«riyaį¹ ārabhati cittaį¹ paggaį¹‡hāti padahati; They generate enthusiasm, try, make an effort, exert the mind, and strive so that skillful qualities arise.

uppannānaį¹ kusalānaį¹ dhammānaį¹ į¹­hitiyā asammosāya bhiyyobhāvāya vepullāya bhāvanāya pāripÅ«riyā chandaį¹ janeti vāyamati vÄ«riyaį¹ ārabhati cittaį¹ paggaį¹‡hāti padahatiā€”They generate enthusiasm, try, make an effort, exert the mind, and strive so that skillful qualities that have arisen remain, are not lost, but increase, mature, and are completed by development.

idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, vÄ«riyindriyaį¹. This is called the faculty of energy.

KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, satindriyaį¹? And what is the faculty of mindfulness?

Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako satimā hoti paramena satinepakkena samannāgato, cirakatampi cirabhāsitampi saritā anussaritā. Itā€™s when a noble disciple is mindful. They have utmost mindfulness and alertness, and can remember and recall what was said and done long ago.

So kāye kāyānupassÄ« viharati ātāpÄ« sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaį¹; They meditate observing an aspect of the bodyā€”keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.

vedanāsu ā€¦peā€¦ They meditate observing an aspect of feelings ā€¦

citte ā€¦peā€¦ mind ā€¦

dhammesu dhammānupassÄ« viharati ātāpÄ« sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaį¹ā€”principlesā€”keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.

idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, satindriyaį¹. This is called the faculty of mindfulness.

KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, samādhindriyaį¹? And what is the faculty of immersion?

Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako vossaggārammaį¹‡aį¹ karitvā labhati samādhiį¹, labhati cittassa ekaggataį¹. Itā€™s when a noble disciple, relying on letting go, gains immersion, gains unification of mind.

So vivicceva kāmehi vivicca akusalehi dhammehi savitakkaį¹ savicāraį¹ vivekajaį¹ pÄ«tisukhaį¹ paį¹­hamaį¹ jhānaį¹ upasampajja viharati. Quite secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unskillful qualities, they enter and remain in the first absorption, which has the rapture and bliss born of seclusion, while placing the mind and keeping it connected.

Vitakkavicārānaį¹ vÅ«pasamā ajjhattaį¹ sampasādanaį¹ cetaso ekodibhāvaį¹ avitakkaį¹ avicāraį¹ samādhijaį¹ pÄ«tisukhaį¹ dutiyaį¹ jhānaį¹ upasampajja viharati. As the placing of the mind and keeping it connected are stilled, they enter and remain in the second absorption, which has the rapture and bliss born of immersion, with internal clarity and mind at one, without placing the mind and keeping it connected.

PÄ«tiyā ca virāgā upekkhako ca viharati sato ca sampajāno sukhaƱca kāyena paį¹­isaį¹vedeti yaį¹ taį¹ ariyā ācikkhanti ā€˜upekkhako satimā sukhavihārÄ«ā€™ti tatiyaį¹ jhānaį¹ upasampajja viharati. And with the fading away of rapture, they enter and remain in the third absorption, where they meditate with equanimity, mindful and aware, personally experiencing the bliss of which the noble ones declare, ā€˜Equanimous and mindful, one meditates in bliss.ā€™

Sukhassa ca pahānā dukkhassa ca pahānā pubbeva somanassadomanassānaį¹ atthaį¹…gamā adukkhamasukhaį¹ upekkhāsatipārisuddhiį¹ catutthaį¹ jhānaį¹ upasampajja viharatiā€”Giving up pleasure and pain, and ending former happiness and sadness, they enter and remain in the fourth absorption, without pleasure or pain, with pure equanimity and mindfulness.

idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, samādhindriyaį¹. This is called the faculty of immersion.

KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, paƱƱindriyaį¹? And what is the faculty of wisdom?

Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako paƱƱavā hoti udayatthagāminiyā paƱƱāya samannāgato ariyāya nibbedhikāya, sammā dukkhakkhayagāminiyā. Itā€™s when a noble disciple is wise. They have the wisdom of arising and passing away which is noble, penetrative, and leads to the complete ending of suffering.

So ā€˜idaį¹ dukkhanā€™ti yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti, ā€˜ayaį¹ dukkhasamudayoā€™ti yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti, ā€˜ayaį¹ dukkhanirodhoā€™ti yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti, ā€˜ayaį¹ dukkhanirodhagāminÄ« paį¹­ipadāā€™ti yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānātiā€”They truly understand: ā€˜This is sufferingā€™ ā€¦ ā€˜This is the origin of sufferingā€™ ā€¦ ā€˜This is the cessation of sufferingā€™ ā€¦ ā€˜This is the practice that leads to the cessation of sufferingā€™.

idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, paƱƱindriyaį¹. This is called the faculty of wisdom.

Imāni kho, bhikkhave, paƱcindriyānÄ«ā€ti. These are the five faculties.ā€

Tassuddānaį¹

SuddhikaƱceva dve sotā,

arahantā apare duve;

Samaį¹‡abrāhmaį¹‡Ä daį¹­į¹­habbaį¹,
