āPaƱcimÄni, bhikkhave, indriyÄni. āMendicants, there are these five faculties.
KatamÄni paƱca? What five?
Saddhindriyaį¹ ā¦peā¦ paƱƱindriyaį¹ ā¦peā¦. The faculties of faith, energy, mindfulness, immersion, and wisdom.
KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, saddhindriyaį¹? And what is the faculty of faith?
Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasÄvako saddho hoti, saddahati tathÄgatassa bodhiį¹: Itās when a noble disciple has faith in the Realized Oneās awakening:
āitipi so bhagavÄ arahaį¹ sammÄsambuddho vijjÄcaraį¹asampanno sugato lokavidÅ« anuttaro purisadammasÄrathi satthÄ devamanussÄnaį¹ buddho bhagavÄātiāāThat Blessed One is perfected, a fully awakened Buddha, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, holy, knower of the world, supreme guide for those who wish to train, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, blessed.ā
idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, saddhindriyaį¹. This is called the faculty of faith.
KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, vÄ«riyindriyaį¹? And what is the faculty of energy?
Yaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, cattÄro sammappadhÄne Ärabbha vÄ«riyaį¹ paį¹ilabhatiāThe energy thatās gained in connection with the four right efforts.
idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, vÄ«riyindriyaį¹. This is called the faculty of energy.
KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, satindriyaį¹? And what is the faculty of mindfulness?
Yaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, cattÄro satipaį¹į¹hÄne Ärabbha satiį¹ paį¹ilabhatiāThe mindfulness thatās gained in connection with the four kinds of mindfulness meditation.
idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, satindriyaį¹. This is called the faculty of mindfulness.
KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, samÄdhindriyaį¹? And what is the faculty of immersion?
Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasÄvako vossaggÄrammaį¹aį¹ karitvÄ labhati samÄdhiį¹, labhati cittassa ekaggataį¹āItās when a noble disciple, relying on letting go, gains immersion, gains unification of mind.
idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, samÄdhindriyaį¹. This is called the faculty of immersion.
KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, paƱƱindriyaį¹? And what is the faculty of wisdom?
Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasÄvako paƱƱavÄ hoti udayatthagÄminiyÄ paƱƱÄya samannÄgato ariyÄya nibbedhikÄya sammÄ dukkhakkhayagÄminiyÄāItās when a noble disciple is wise. They have the wisdom of arising and passing away which is noble, penetrative, and leads to the complete ending of suffering.
idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, paƱƱindriyaį¹. This is called the faculty of wisdom.
ImÄni kho, bhikkhave, paƱcindriyÄnÄ«āti. These are the five faculties.ā
