ā€œPaƱcimāni, bhikkhave, indriyāni. ā€œMendicants, there are these five faculties.

Katamāni paƱca? What five?

Sukhindriyaį¹, dukkhindriyaį¹, somanassindriyaį¹, domanassindriyaį¹, upekkhindriyaį¹. The faculties of pleasure, pain, happiness, sadness, and equanimity.

KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, sukhindriyaį¹? And what is the faculty of pleasure?

Yaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, kāyikaį¹ sukhaį¹, kāyikaį¹ sātaį¹, kāyasamphassajaį¹ sukhaį¹ sātaį¹ vedayitaį¹ā€”Physical enjoyment, physical pleasure, the enjoyable, pleasant feeling thatā€™s born from physical contact.

idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, sukhindriyaį¹. This is called the faculty of pleasure.

KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, dukkhindriyaį¹? And what is the faculty of pain?

Yaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, kāyikaį¹ dukkhaį¹, kāyikaį¹ asātaį¹, kāyasamphassajaį¹ dukkhaį¹ asātaį¹ vedayitaį¹ā€”Physical pain, physical unpleasantness, the painful, unpleasant feeling thatā€™s born from physical contact.

idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, dukkhindriyaį¹. This is called the faculty of pain.

KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, somanassindriyaį¹? And what is the faculty of happiness?

Yaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, cetasikaį¹ sukhaį¹, cetasikaį¹ sātaį¹, manosamphassajaį¹ sukhaį¹ sātaį¹ vedayitaį¹ā€”Mental enjoyment, mental pleasure, the enjoyable, pleasant feeling thatā€™s born from mind contact.

KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, domanassindriyaį¹? And what is the faculty of sadness?

Yaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, cetasikaį¹ dukkhaį¹, cetasikaį¹ asātaį¹, manosamphassajaį¹ dukkhaį¹ asātaį¹ vedayitaį¹ā€”Mental pain, mental displeasure, the painful, unpleasant feeling thatā€™s born from mind contact.

idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, domanassindriyaį¹. This is called the faculty of sadness.

KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, upekkhindriyaį¹? And what is the faculty of equanimity?

Yaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, kāyikaį¹ vā cetasikaį¹ vā neva sātaį¹ nāsātaį¹ vedayitaį¹ā€”Neither pleasant nor unpleasant feeling, whether physical or mental.

idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, upekkhindriyaį¹. This is the faculty of equanimity.

Tatra, bhikkhave, yaƱca sukhindriyaį¹ yaƱca somanassindriyaį¹, sukhā sā vedanā daį¹­į¹­habbā. In this context, the faculties of pleasure and happiness should be seen as pleasant feeling.

Tatra, bhikkhave, yaƱca dukkhindriyaį¹ yaƱca domanassindriyaį¹, dukkhā sā vedanā daį¹­į¹­habbā. The faculties of pain and sadness should be seen as painful feeling.

Tatra, bhikkhave, yadidaį¹ upekkhindriyaį¹, adukkhamasukhā sā vedanā daį¹­į¹­habbā. The faculty of equanimity should be seen as neutral feeling.

Iti kho, bhikkhave, imāni paƱcindriyāni paƱca hutvā tÄ«į¹‡i honti, tÄ«į¹‡i hutvā paƱca honti pariyāyenāā€ti. Thatā€™s how these five faculties, depending on how theyā€™re explained, having been five become three, and having been three become five.ā€
