Kaį¹­į¹­hopamasutta The Simile of the Fire Sticks

ā€œPaƱcimāni, bhikkhave, indriyāni. ā€œMendicants, there are these five faculties.

Katamāni paƱca? What five?

Sukhindriyaį¹, dukkhindriyaį¹, somanassindriyaį¹, domanassindriyaį¹, upekkhindriyaį¹. The faculties of pleasure, pain, happiness, sadness, and equanimity.

Sukhavedaniyaį¹, bhikkhave, phassaį¹ paį¹­icca uppajjati sukhindriyaį¹. The faculty of pleasure arises dependent on a contact to be experienced as pleasant.

So sukhitova samāno ā€˜sukhitosmÄ«ā€™ti pajānāti. When in a state of pleasure, you understand: ā€˜Iā€™m in a state of pleasure.ā€™

Tasseva sukhavedaniyassa phassassa nirodhā ā€˜yaį¹ tajjaį¹ vedayitaį¹ sukhavedaniyaį¹ phassaį¹ paį¹­icca uppannaį¹ sukhindriyaį¹ taį¹ nirujjhati, taį¹ vÅ«pasammatÄ«ā€™ti pajānāti. With the cessation of that contact to be experienced as pleasant, you understand that the corresponding faculty of pleasure ceases and stops.

Dukkhavedaniyaį¹, bhikkhave, phassaį¹ paį¹­icca uppajjati dukkhindriyaį¹. The faculty of pain arises dependent on a contact to be experienced as painful.

So dukkhitova samāno ā€˜dukkhitosmÄ«ā€™ti pajānāti. When in a state of pain, you understand: ā€˜Iā€™m in a state of pain.ā€™

Tasseva dukkhavedaniyassa phassassa nirodhā ā€˜yaį¹ tajjaį¹ vedayitaį¹ dukkhavedaniyaį¹ phassaį¹ paį¹­icca uppannaį¹ dukkhindriyaį¹ taį¹ nirujjhati, taį¹ vÅ«pasammatÄ«ā€™ti pajānāti. With the cessation of that contact to be experienced as painful, you understand that the corresponding faculty of pain ceases and stops.

Somanassavedaniyaį¹, bhikkhave, phassaį¹ paį¹­icca uppajjati somanassindriyaį¹. The faculty of happiness arises dependent on a contact to be experienced as happiness.

So sumanova samāno ā€˜sumanosmÄ«ā€™ti pajānāti. When in a state of happiness, you understand: ā€˜Iā€™m in a state of happiness.ā€™

Tasseva somanassavedaniyassa phassassa nirodhā ā€˜yaį¹ tajjaį¹ vedayitaį¹ somanassavedaniyaį¹ phassaį¹ paį¹­icca uppannaį¹ somanassindriyaį¹ taį¹ nirujjhati, taį¹ vÅ«pasammatÄ«ā€™ti pajānāti. With the cessation of that contact to be experienced as happiness, you understand that the corresponding faculty of happiness ceases and stops.

Domanassavedaniyaį¹, bhikkhave, phassaį¹ paį¹­icca uppajjati domanassindriyaį¹. The faculty of sadness arises dependent on a contact to be experienced as sadness.

So dummanova samāno ā€˜dummanosmÄ«ā€™ti pajānāti. When in a state of sadness, you understand: ā€˜Iā€™m in a state of sadness.ā€™

Tasseva domanassavedaniyassa phassassa nirodhā ā€˜yaį¹ tajjaį¹ vedayitaį¹ domanassavedaniyaį¹ phassaį¹ paį¹­icca uppannaį¹ domanassindriyaį¹ taį¹ nirujjhati, taį¹ vÅ«pasammatÄ«ā€™ti pajānāti. With the cessation of that contact to be experienced as sadness, you understand that the corresponding faculty of sadness ceases and stops.

Upekkhāvedaniyaį¹, bhikkhave, phassaį¹ paį¹­icca uppajjati upekkhindriyaį¹. The faculty of equanimity arises dependent on a contact to be experienced as equanimous.

So upekkhakova samāno ā€˜upekkhakosmÄ«ā€™ti pajānāti. When in a state of equanimity, you understand: ā€˜Iā€™m in a state of equanimity.ā€™

Tasseva upekkhāvedaniyassa phassassa nirodhā ā€˜yaį¹ tajjaį¹ vedayitaį¹ upekkhāvedaniyaį¹ phassaį¹ paį¹­icca uppannaį¹ upekkhindriyaį¹ taį¹ nirujjhati, taį¹ vÅ«pasammatÄ«ā€™ti pajānāti. With the cessation of that contact to be experienced as equanimous, you understand that the corresponding faculty of equanimity ceases and stops.

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, dvinnaį¹ kaį¹­į¹­hānaį¹ saį¹…ghaį¹­į¹­anasamodhānā usmā jāyati, tejo abhinibbattati; tesaį¹yeva kaį¹­į¹­hānaį¹ nānābhāvāvinikkhepā yā tajjā usmā sā nirujjhati sā vÅ«pasammati; When you rub two sticks together, heat is generated and fire is produced. But when you part the sticks and lay them aside, any corresponding heat ceases and stops.

evameva kho, bhikkhave, sukhavedaniyaį¹ phassaį¹ paį¹­icca uppajjati sukhindriyaį¹. In the same way, the faculty of pleasure arises dependent on a contact to be experienced as pleasant.

So sukhitova samāno ā€˜sukhitosmÄ«ā€™ti pajānāti. When in a state of pleasure, you understand: ā€˜Iā€™m in a state of pleasure.ā€™
