Pubbakoį¹­į¹­hakasutta At the Eastern Gate

Evaį¹ me sutaį¹ā€”So I have heard.

ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavā sāvatthiyaį¹ viharati pubbakoį¹­į¹­hake. At one time the Buddha was staying in SāvatthÄ« at the eastern gate.

Tatra kho bhagavā āyasmantaį¹ sāriputtaį¹ āmantesi: Then the Buddha said to Venerable Sāriputta:

ā€œsaddahasi tvaį¹, sāriputtaā€”ā€œSāriputta, do you have faith that

saddhindriyaį¹ bhāvitaį¹ bahulÄ«kataį¹ amatogadhaį¹ hoti amataparāyaį¹‡aį¹ amatapariyosānaį¹ ā€¦peā€¦ paƱƱindriyaį¹ bhāvitaį¹ bahulÄ«kataį¹ amatogadhaį¹ hoti amataparāyaį¹‡aį¹ amatapariyosānanā€ti? the faculties of faith, energy, mindfulness, immersion, and wisdom, when developed and cultivated, culminate, finish, and end in freedom from death?ā€

ā€œNa khvāhaį¹ ettha, bhante, bhagavato saddhāya gacchāmiā€”ā€œSir, in this case I donā€™t rely on faith in the Buddhaā€™s claim that

saddhindriyaį¹ ā€¦peā€¦ paƱƱindriyaį¹ bhāvitaį¹ bahulÄ«kataį¹ amatogadhaį¹ hoti amataparāyaį¹‡aį¹ amatapariyosānaį¹. the faculties of faith, energy, mindfulness, immersion, and wisdom, when developed and cultivated, culminate, finish, and end in freedom from death.

YesaƱhetaį¹, bhante, aƱƱātaį¹ assa adiį¹­į¹­haį¹ aviditaį¹ asacchikataį¹ aphassitaį¹ paƱƱāya, te tattha paresaį¹ saddhāya gaccheyyuį¹ā€”There are those who have not known or seen or understood or realized or experienced this with wisdom. They may rely on faith in this matter.

saddhindriyaį¹ ā€¦peā€¦ paƱƱindriyaį¹ bhāvitaį¹ bahulÄ«kataį¹ amatogadhaį¹ hoti amataparāyaį¹‡aį¹ amatapariyosānaį¹.

YesaƱca kho etaį¹, bhante, Ʊātaį¹ diį¹­į¹­haį¹ viditaį¹ sacchikataį¹ phassitaį¹ paƱƱāya, nikkaį¹…khā te tattha nibbicikicchāā€”But there are those who have known, seen, understood, realized, and experienced this with wisdom. They have no doubts or uncertainties in this matter.

saddhindriyaį¹ ā€¦peā€¦ paƱƱindriyaį¹ bhāvitaį¹ bahulÄ«kataį¹ amatogadhaį¹ hoti amataparāyaį¹‡aį¹ amatapariyosānaį¹.

MayhaƱca kho etaį¹, bhante, Ʊātaį¹ diį¹­į¹­haį¹ viditaį¹ sacchikataį¹ phassitaį¹ paƱƱāya. I have known, seen, understood, realized, and experienced this with wisdom.

Nikkaį¹…khvāhaį¹ tattha nibbicikiccho saddhindriyaį¹ ā€¦peā€¦ paƱƱindriyaį¹ bhāvitaį¹ bahulÄ«kataį¹ amatogadhaį¹ hoti amataparāyaį¹‡aį¹ amatapariyosānanā€ti. I have no doubts or uncertainties that the faculties of faith, energy, mindfulness, immersion, and wisdom, when developed and cultivated, culminate, finish, and end in freedom from death.ā€

ā€œSādhu sādhu, sāriputta. ā€œGood, good, Sāriputta!
