Paį¹hamapubbārāmasutta At the Eastern Monastery (1st)

Evaį¹ me sutaį¹ā€”So I have heard.

ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavā sāvatthiyaį¹ viharati pubbārāme migāramātupāsāde. At one time the Buddha was staying near SāvatthÄ« in the stilt longhouse of Migāraā€™s mother in the Eastern Monastery.

Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi: There the Buddha addressed the mendicants:

ā€œkatinaį¹ nu kho, bhikkhave, indriyānaį¹ bhāvitattā bahulÄ«katattā khÄ«į¹‡Äsavo bhikkhu aƱƱaį¹ byākaroti: ā€œMendicants, how many faculties must a mendicant develop and cultivate so that they can declare enlightenment:

ā€˜khÄ«į¹‡Ä jāti, vusitaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹, kataį¹ karaį¹‡Ä«yaį¹, nāparaį¹ itthattāyāā€™ti pajānāmÄ«ā€ti? ā€˜I understand: ā€œRebirth is ended, the spiritual journey has been completed, what had to be done has been done, there is nothing further for this placeā€ā€™?ā€

ā€œBhagavaį¹mÅ«lakā no, bhante, dhammā ā€¦peā€¦ ā€œOur teachings are rooted in the Buddha. ā€¦ā€

ā€œekassa kho, bhikkhave, indriyassa bhāvitattā bahulÄ«katattā khÄ«į¹‡Äsavo bhikkhu aƱƱaį¹ byākaroti: ā€œA mendicant must develop and cultivate one faculty so that they can declare enlightenment.

ā€˜khÄ«į¹‡Ä jāti, vusitaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹, kataį¹ karaį¹‡Ä«yaį¹, nāparaį¹ itthattāyāā€™ti pajānāmÄ«ti.

Katamassa ekassa paƱƱindriyassa paƱƱavato, bhikkhave, ariyasāvakassa tadanvayā saddhā saį¹‡į¹hāti, tadanvayaį¹ vÄ«riyaį¹ saį¹‡į¹hāti, tadanvayā sati saį¹‡į¹hāti, tadanvayo samādhi saį¹‡į¹hāti. What one? The faculty of wisdom. When a noble disciple has wisdom, the faith, energy, mindfulness, and immersion that follow along with that become stabilized.

Imassa kho, bhikkhave, ekassa indriyassa bhāvitattā bahulÄ«katattā khÄ«į¹‡Äsavo bhikkhu aƱƱaį¹ byākaroti: This is the one faculty that a mendicant must develop and cultivate so that they can declare enlightenment:

ā€˜khÄ«į¹‡Ä jāti, vusitaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹, kataį¹ karaį¹‡Ä«yaį¹, nāparaį¹ itthattāyāā€™ti pajānāmÄ«ā€ti. ā€˜I understand: ā€œRebirth is ended, the spiritual journey has been completed, what had to be done has been done, there is nothing further for this placeā€ā€™.ā€
