Evaį¹ me sutaį¹āSo I have heard.
ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ sÄvatthiyaį¹ viharati pubbÄrÄme migÄramÄtupÄsÄde. At one time the Buddha was staying near SÄvatthÄ« in the stilt longhouse of MigÄraās mother in the Eastern Monastery.
Tatra kho bhagavÄ bhikkhÅ« Ämantesi: There the Buddha addressed the mendicants:
ākatinaį¹ nu kho, bhikkhave, indriyÄnaį¹ bhÄvitattÄ bahulÄ«katattÄ khÄ«į¹Äsavo bhikkhu aƱƱaį¹ byÄkaroti: āMendicants, how many faculties must a mendicant develop and cultivate so that they can declare enlightenment:
ākhÄ«į¹Ä jÄti, vusitaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹, kataį¹ karaį¹Ä«yaį¹, nÄparaį¹ itthattÄyÄāti pajÄnÄmÄ«āti? āI understand: āRebirth is ended, the spiritual journey has been completed, what had to be done has been done, there is nothing further for this placeāā?ā
āBhagavaį¹mÅ«lakÄ no, bhante, dhammÄ ā¦peā¦ āOur teachings are rooted in the Buddha. ā¦ā
āekassa kho, bhikkhave, indriyassa bhÄvitattÄ bahulÄ«katattÄ khÄ«į¹Äsavo bhikkhu aƱƱaį¹ byÄkaroti: āA mendicant must develop and cultivate one faculty so that they can declare enlightenment.
ākhÄ«į¹Ä jÄti, vusitaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹, kataį¹ karaį¹Ä«yaį¹, nÄparaį¹ itthattÄyÄāti pajÄnÄmÄ«ti.
Katamassa ekassa paƱƱindriyassa paƱƱavato, bhikkhave, ariyasÄvakassa tadanvayÄ saddhÄ saį¹į¹hÄti, tadanvayaį¹ vÄ«riyaį¹ saį¹į¹hÄti, tadanvayÄ sati saį¹į¹hÄti, tadanvayo samÄdhi saį¹į¹hÄti. What one? The faculty of wisdom. When a noble disciple has wisdom, the faith, energy, mindfulness, and immersion that follow along with that become stabilized.
Imassa kho, bhikkhave, ekassa indriyassa bhÄvitattÄ bahulÄ«katattÄ khÄ«į¹Äsavo bhikkhu aƱƱaį¹ byÄkaroti: This is the one faculty that a mendicant must develop and cultivate so that they can declare enlightenment:
ākhÄ«į¹Ä jÄti, vusitaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹, kataį¹ karaį¹Ä«yaį¹, nÄparaį¹ itthattÄyÄāti pajÄnÄmÄ«āti. āI understand: āRebirth is ended, the spiritual journey has been completed, what had to be done has been done, there is nothing further for this placeāā.ā
